Could it be that your DS is trying to act older than he is? I know DS often tells his friends that he is allowed 18 games, is allowed beer at parties, stays up til midnight, gets a £50 allowance etc etc - none of it is true but they try to outdo one another and maybe this is your DS' way of trying to appear hard to his mates.

DS Y7 has been covering smoking / alcohol / drugs at school in PHSE and has been asking lots of questions, I worry that he may be on the cusp of experimenting in a year or so.

FWIW my parents said if I wanted to smoke they would buy me them and I could smoke them in front of them at home, it didn't work - I bought and smoked in secret. DHs parents tried the same approach with different results. Not sure what the answer is.
