swimming when having period

I took 13 yr old dd & some friends swimming today. Initially one of them wasnt coming as she had her period - fair enough, my ddd hasnt started yet but I imagine will use pads initially, hence However there was a change of plan, she went swimming and wore a pair of shorts over her swim suit Confused. So i asked one of the other mothers in case i was missing something. Her dd has just started, uses pads and doesnt swim when she has her period. So why the shorts? I asked my dd and she doenst know, i'm puzzled!!

Never heard of this. However I have heard of people who (bizarrely) think you can wear a pad and still swim. Maybe she did this but with shorts on the top as a kind of extra layer (that would prove useless imo)

yes i agree, its got me puzzled but was intrigued! DOnt know the girls mother well enough to quiz her!

could it be unconnected to her period? I know of people who worry about their weight/cellulite or whatever that wear baggy t-shirts over a cossie? Perhaps this is another version of that type of thing? (and she was either wearing tampon or period was short?)

no, i've noticed that some people wear shorts over their costumes and yes always assumed it was a weight thing (obvious in some cases but sometimes some 'normally' sized young girls spoiling a nice costume with a pair of shorts over them!) but no, the shorts were specifically linked to the period!. I think they were extra padding!!

could she be wearing a tampon and scared the string would show/fall out of her costume... ?

FoJo · 05/05/2011 22:06

hadnt thought of that one fluffles!! Its quite funny sometimes to think how their minds work!

It was quite common for my daughter and her friends to wear shorts when swimming during their period. They all used tampons but were scared of the string showing or "leaking" and felt less exposed with the shorts on.

A lot of young people wear the shorts for modesty and in case any pubic hair shows if the swimsuit rides up if they are quite body conscious. However, sometimes the guards tell them they cannot swim like that - which is doubly embarassing for them

thanks everyone. Nice to know these things so i know what to expect when dd wants to do the same as everyone else!
