Ok-so how many of you would allow a 14 year old have their belly pierced?

No way.Friend had it done and had the mother of all infections it was revolting and she was in agony!

Tortington · 13/03/2011 13:16

no, its tarty and says i am seuxally mature

not a good look on a 14 yo

tbh its not a good look on anyone - its just cheap and chav and nasty.

unless you sport a croydon facelift and wear velour tracksuits

BrigitBigKnickers · 13/03/2011 13:20

Any more?- DD tells me all her friends have had it done and that I am unreasonable and old fashioned!

No.

I am quite laid back about things, but I think some things have to wait until you are an adult and make the decision to do this yourself.

DD had ears pierced at 9. I had originally told her 11, but she was being very mature and grown up about some other things that were going on in her life and so I felt she was ready for it as a treat and because she was being so sensible.

She has asked about a second piercing and I have said no. This time I mean it. I have told her she can do it when she's an adult if she wants.

boosmummie · 13/03/2011 13:58

DDs 1+2 had theirs done at 16. Wanted it earlier but I wouldn't let. Both had ears done at 12 (I hadn't really wanted them done before 13/14 but they discovered I had been 12 so had no way out...)

DD1 has 2nd piercing, but she's 17 now.

DD3 is 2 and there is no way she's getting hers done for a long time. We live in Spain where baby girls routinely have theirs done by around 3m, and even though DD3 was often in pink and did look like a girl from the very beginning, the Spanish would always ask whether she was a nina or nino because her ears weren't pierced!

dexter73 · 13/03/2011 14:30

I wouldn't let my dd(14) have it done yet. I think 16 would be ok. Have you asked any of her friends if they have one?

TheVisitor · 13/03/2011 14:32

No, no and no again. Belly button piercings get infected SO easily, and look tarty.

GypsyMoth · 13/03/2011 14:32

dd was 15,few weeks off 16 which meant a different belly bar, which she was not happy about

but she's not at all chavy...she was gping to Greece for a week and is bikini fit!! and looked stunning....

boosmummie · 13/03/2011 14:36

I don't think it's chavy or tarty until they put those hideous dangly bars through. But they generally have a tramp stamp to match...

Timbachick · 13/03/2011 14:39

Wouldn't let my 14 yo DD get her belly button pierced - I thought it was illegal for places to pierce people younger than 16 (but I may be wrong)?

She should wait until 16.

I am very tolerant of body art - piercing/tattooing but not on the young.

mamalovesmojitos · 13/03/2011 14:40

I don't think it's a big deal really. I suppose she's a little young so maybe put her off a couple of years if you feel strongly about it. My mum was always fine with piercings, didn't like them, but i had a few by the age of seventeen.

I'm just glad I expressed myself that way and never got a tattoo; I've been able to remove all my piercings. Hair dye and piercings etc are a form of self-expression and are easily reversed (bar perhaps some mild scarring if you are unlucky). hth.

yasminkate · 13/03/2011 16:15

I wouldn't have a problem - but you have to be prepared to look after the piercing for several weeks/months until it heals up. Talk to her about avoiding the tarty bars and going for something very simple. It's got to be better than drink and cigarettes which she can get without any problems. My daughter grew out of the idea and I told her it was painful - enough to put her off.

GypsyMoth · 13/03/2011 17:46

i was more horrified at her TRAGUS being pierced!!

Choufleur · 13/03/2011 17:51

Ah - I have a tramp stamp (I have other tattoos and actually like them - don't care what other people think) and a hole where I used to have a belly piercing.

I wouldn't like a girl at 14 have it done though.

Choufleur · 13/03/2011 17:51

It does bloody hurt too.

GypsyMoth · 13/03/2011 17:56

i had mine pierced after baby number 4 to mark 4 pregnancies with NO stretch marks and a very toned and flat tum!!

i still have the tum,but after baby no5 i took piercing out and it healed up. might get it done again!!

ednurse · 13/03/2011 17:57

Had mine done age 13....10 years ago.

pettyprudence · 13/03/2011 17:58

I had my belly button pierced at 14 - it hurt considerably less than my nose and ear piercings and was the only one NOT to get infected.

My mums policy was nothing on the face and she was ok with it because the holes leaves such tiny almost invisible scars.

Meglet · 13/03/2011 18:05

Not on a 14yo. She will have to wait.

I had my belly, toungue and lip pierced but not until my 20's. Mum wouldn't even let me get my ears done until I was 16.

sharbie · 13/03/2011 18:05

yuk no chavvy and cheap

tegan · 13/03/2011 18:18

I think 14 is ok as long as you monitor it daily to make sure it is ok and your dd appreciates the fact you have to check it.

Dd1 is 13 next month and is dead against having body piercings.

I had both dd's ears pierced on their 1st b'days and they love buying jewellery but dd1 won't even have her ears pierced again so i don't think this is gonna be an issue until dd2 is a little older

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 13/03/2011 18:25

No.

80sMum · 13/03/2011 18:41

No, I definitely wouldn't allow it.

GardenersDelight · 13/03/2011 19:59

Both DD's had it done at 15 with no problems
