DDs first period

hey, just a question that needs to be swered my 12 and half year old started her periods, today is day seven, flow has slowed down but still there,how long should it last more or this is already too long, what to do, how long to wait before showing GP, dont want to scare her, has no pain or discomfort at all..

7 days is a long time for a first period, it may be normal but I think you should take her to the GP.

dd1 has ha soe particularly long-lasting periods. It's settling down more but can still be a bit erratic

It can all be a bit erratic for a couple of years - DD2 had them every two weeks for several months. In the calendar bit at the front of my diary I put a circle round the date for mine and DD2 puts a square round hers - she's very good at remembering.DD1 (17) has been on Mefenamic Acid tablets for a couple yrs due to really painful periods.
I think it will sort itself out eventually. Only worry if she has a really heavy flow for a long time

I remember being this age- I had v heavy periods from the word go! (started at 11). Lasted 10 days each time but would often be every six weeks or so. After birth of only child (aged 31) they have regulated to clockwork 28 days/lasting 5 days. I wouldn't bother GP unless it becomes unbearably painful or she starts looking ill/drained. Hope DD is OK bless her!

thnks for all your wishes she has no pain at all and is as active as can be they have slowed down considerably so i think i will wait for a day will keep u all updated...

My dd's first period was a bloodbath - trails of blood everywhere and dd in denial. It was at Christmas as well and we had a houseful of guests.

My dd started her periods about a year ago. They have been very erratic so far, and also very long - 7 or 8 days each time. I think it takes a long time for them to settle down into a regular cycle. I wouldn't worry - but if you are, maybe you could talk to the GP about it yourself? I wouldn't take her - if she's like mine she would rather die!

Thanks all but they seem to have stopped now day 8 but its ok i really wouldnt have been able to cope and help DD without the support of MN

That's good to hear nonu. DD is 14 and has been having periods for about a year now, but only just starting to settle down. For months she had nothing, then she'd have only a two week break between them. They are more regular now but quite heavy and drawn out - often 10 days. Reassure her it's all normal.:)

Wait a day or two, i don't think it should last this long but if she's really worried then take her to nurse of female GP. but oh god, do not take her to a male gp. She doesn't need to be humiliated.
But i think it should be ok, but as musicposy says it's probably normal.

I started my periods at 13. The first few were AWFUL. They dragged on for ages and were really heavy.

I was wondering how I was going to make it to the menopause without dying of blood loss!

But they settled down after a while and are now hardly noticeable at all.
