dp and I have been arguing for about three years about which one of us is going to teach her to drive... I remember my dad teaching me and it didn't go well

Wait till he passes, and you can use him as your chauffeur. Makes up for all the years of ferrying them about.

He's having proper lessons as well, just using me as a body (with a full licence) next to him really.

You're nicer than me Duchesse! - I absolutely hate being in the car with learners. DD1 was quite good by the time I got into a car with her but I still hung on to the door handle and used an imaginary brake. Now DD2's driving instructor has said she is ready to do some private practice. DH says he'll take her out and then is never available so its me or no one

ds1 is 17 in January too. Had always envisaged teaching him to drive. I never had any proper lessons 25 years ago, my Granddad taught me. Just can't afford to put ds1 on the insurance though.

duchesse we'll be going through this in about a year, but am slightly terrified at the quotes for insurance (worst ws over £8k, best over £4k).

Which insurance co did you get to put your ds on your insurance, or did you get him his own policy, and do you mind telling me roughly how much you had to shell out?

We've taken out Provisional Marmalade insurance that is his own policy. It costs £90 a month, for 1, 2 or 3 months and we baulked at it for a while but just decided to bite the bullet yesterday and go for it. It only covers young people driving a car registered to someone else and it's there own personal policy, which means that if even they have a prang, your no claims bonus is not affected on your policy.

mumble- I think it might depend where you live as well. We seem to live in a low risk area and got hte best possible quote. Those quotes are off-putting- I think that's the intention. There are better ones out there. I wonder if the NFU offers cheaper quotes to under 25s- after all many young people are driving tractors at at 16 around here.

oooh that Provisional insurance sounds perfect for me. I never knew such a thing existed.

DD will be covered on my company car insurance once she passes her test (and pass plus) but they dont cover any provisional drivers.

Luckily I have a few years to go yet....assuming I haven't throttled her by then!

Spooky! I came to this topic specifically to ask about teen car insurance and this thread was there!
I called my insurer this morning (e sure) and they don't cover anyone under 19.
I've just checked the provisional marmalade site and got the £90 per month quote. Is that really going to be the best deal?
