Dsd and facebook.

Bit of background. Dsd is 14, very very bright, doing very well at school, usually polite, eloquent and well liked by teachers and peers at school. She has some good, close friends who she spends lots of time with, usually baking cakes or watching dvd's.

But reading everything she writes on facebook you'd think she was an alcoholic, drug taking, illiterate uncared for soon to be teenage mum! I know she's just showing off but I worry that this will be a permanent and false record of how she behaves. Dp has spoken to her about the swearing and sex references etc. but her way of getting round it was defriend him!

What I'm asking I suppose is whether it's a huge problem, and if it is how do I deal with it without her defriending me too? Thanks

Nah. Anyone who knows anything about teenagers will know that they are prone - absolutely in thrall, in fact - to hyperbole.

I once screamed at my mother that I wanted to die. I didn't want to die. I wanted to go to a sleepover at my friend's where there was a good chance that the boy I liked would be showing up.

You're right colditz. The strange thing with dsd is that she's just not like that usually, but suppose it's better she vents and swears on facebook than in real life! I know some people can be very judgemental of teenagers so feel like commenting on everything she writes to explain that actually she's nothing like this really! And she can spell properly!

One thing I would be careful about is future employers. I know my DH turned down a job applicant because he saw the applicants facebook.

I spoke to DSD about posting on FB when we knew she was at school. Just in a friendly 'if I can see it so can your dad' She defriended him (but kept me!)

Some of what she puts makes me cringe, and she posts in welsh sometimes which makes me think hmmm (I can't read it)

She did change her settings tho' to only friends when I pointed out that her teachers / employers could search for her....

(another friend has only her first names registered, if your dsd did this she couldn't be searched ie Sophie Smith is registered as Sophie Jane)
