Teen as extra cardholder?

We're thinking that when DS starts driving, we'll pay for the petrol in his car to help keep him mobile. But rather than hand over cash, I was wondering if we'd be able to get something like a credit card and make him an extra card holder on it, then pay it off (so long as its just petrol going onto it!). But he'd only be 17, assuming he passes his test of course.

Does anyone know if that's ok on an ordinary credit card, or if there's anything else we could get instead?

TIA

For a credit card the holder needs to be 18 as under 18's cannot be legally responsible for debt.

could you not transfer money into his bank account and he could then use his debit card?

You could buy a pre-pay card and load it up with money.

Still no guarantee that he won't spend it on other things fo course...

Can individuals get fuel cards? That would be your best bet if you could, obviously it means that the money can't be spent on anything else.

Thanks all - I can't seem tofind any personal fuel cards, but there do seem to be a few prepaid credit cards which they can have under 18, so I'll look into that.

Thanks again!

I had one as a kid and was handy for emergencies, especially as I lived away from home

was VERY different to having your own one because you know the statements go to your parents and it can be taken away at any time

But I personally don't use credit cards at petrol stations - aren't they the most common place for card cloning? I'm always careful to have cash when getting petrol
