C Card

I thought I would post this for those of you who have teenagers who are sexually active.

I attend a young mums group, and this week we all had a one on one session about sexual health / protection etc., and we were all issued with a "C Card". Now, I've never heard of this before, was never mentioned in my sex ed / PSHE class. Basically, its a free condom card. If you're between 13 and 35, you can go, with this card, into a list of places in most cities, present it over the counter without having to say a word, and be given a bag of condoms for free. Boots and Superdrug as well as most youth centres and FPC do it.

Just thought it might be helpful to pass on. I don't know whether its now covered in PSHE lessons or not, but in case it isn't... :)

Up to 35?! Really?
Wow never knew that!
I thought i was slightly too old now for free condoms! Could save myself a fortune Grin

Itsbitsy08.

Sat here feeling really low because of abusive DD but your comment made me laugh, I am certainly too old for free condoms!! thanks for cheering me up.

On a serious note, it is worth knowing as I think my 13yr DD is sexually active Sad

You can get it through Connexions and other places. Teenagers have to pass Gillick compentacy to be given one.

I did the training last year then they decided it wasn't appropriate for my role to give them out Hmm

i am a c card assessor...its only youth workers, family planning clinics and gum clinics who issue them in wales as a far as i know...its a great scheme that really works. Smile

Im a family worker working mainly with teens and they expanded it into Childrns Services here then decided that residential workers could but family workers couldn't.

LadyLapsang · 10/09/2010 13:25

Excellent idea. How would students starting university get one?

nymphadora · 10/09/2010 14:29

Connexions?

hsg · 10/09/2010 19:51

Connexions are a support service, govnmt funded to help 13-19 yr old with any issues that they may be facing ranging from career choices, student finance, homelessness, benefits, health, relationships etc etc, basically any issue going - if they can't help then they'll know someone who can. most centre's can give out condoms under the C card scheme. no questions asked.
