Do your teenagers do old-fashioned hobbies like crafts and sports?

Am just nosy really - I have no teenagers myself.
If you watch tv you get the impression teenagers spend their lives binge-drinking, playing computer games, and doing massive amounts of GCSE and A Level coursework, with a hardcore who also stab each other and have unprotected sex.

I am wondering how many of them still in fact do the traditional things they all used to do in the (probably non-existent) 1950s utopia, like sewing, photography, organised sports and amateur dramatics.

What hobbies do your teenagers have?

Mine is nearly 14 and does singing, piano, sports and likes cooking and drawing. She looks at me with disgust when I have a glass of wine "you're taking drugs".
No doubt by the end of year 9 things will have changed....
her friends are similar. But there are girls in her year group who look about 22, smoke and have dry if not wet sex with their boyfriends

DD is a computer girl, but also does dressing up, drama, sailing, hanging out with friends and occasional partying and some drinking.
As opposed to my own teen years in the 70s which were full of Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll. All to excess.
DS is a scout and canoeist who also hikes with a sketchbook in his pack in case he spots something interesting. Plays the violin too.

My teens are involved in amateur dramatics, church bell-ringing, singing, piano, guitar lessons, cooking, cartooning, and occasionally knitting.

this is all sounding very wholesome. I can feel my heart warming already

Am especially loving the idea of Goblinchild's ds hiking with a sketchbook in his pocket.

DD1 has made herself a patchwork glasses case these holidays, it's very pretty. She does spend a bit too much time on her laptop though generally.

And pockets full of geological specimens and Interesting Stuff I've Found.

DS1 plays rugby and cricket. he enjoys running and enjoys most sports.

he draws and paints at home a lot. He reads for pleasure and especially like poetry and is just getting into photography.

He also volunteers at a charity for disabilities. He is very funny and is startingto write scripts.

He also spends time with his girlfriend

he is 17.

Amazingly I still often wantto kill him

DD loves baking and cooking. She will often announce that she is making dinner or a cake. Fine by me.

She also makes her own cards with those godforsaken bits and bobs you buy from Hobbycraft. Never have to buy a card, just holler up the stairs that I need one.

She plays cricket, rugby, football and netball for her school teams.

She goes to Air Cadets which is remarkably old fashioned, spends a lot of time ironing her kit and polishing her shoes. Likes marching and waving flags.

STILL pisses me off no end by playing bloody Paramore and You Me at Six (is that what they are called) at 1000 decibels.

My DS plays rugby and hockey for local teams.

He does skateboarding and BMXing.
He swims a fair amount and occasionally uses the gym.

He uses his laptop and Xbox quite a bit but I think it balances out with his physical activity.

DD (15) plays in a pipe band, does lots of Facebook, writes short stories, makes cupcakes and likes jewellery making.
DS (13) XBOX mad but also likes cycling ( done at least 5 miles a day for the last couple weeks) rugby, cricket

DD is 13, loves sports - rowing, swimming, netball, surfing and running. She loves Guides, cooking, reading and making films on iMovie. She loves camping and wants to join the CCF, because she loves the idea of assault courses, camping and hiking through mud!

AND she also loves her friends, going shopping, playing some awful game called Doodlejump on her phone and doing Facebook!

I'm 16. I like sports like running, rockclimbing, horseriding etc. and stuff like photography, reading, painting and walking.

I still spend loads of time on the internet, and slightly less time doing schoolwork and drinking. I haven't stabbed anyone yet. :P

But anyway, all is not lost. Some of us still like old-fashioned hobbies.

DD1 is 14 does ballet, flute, loves drawing and arty things and spends hours on facebook and in front of the TV, usually with a book on the go at the same time.

DD2 is 12 rides her bike/scooter, does tennis, guitar, violin and spends hours in front of internet/TV

They've both spent the summer holidays playing out with friends, going to the forest for picnics, playing in the river, camping out and generally living like an enid blyton book.

DS 15 in two weeks kayaks, climbs, akateboards and into photography

DD 13 in 3 weeks sings,swims and upstairs at the moment doing photography. She also likes horseriding, but we can't afford for her togo too often and kayaking. She alsd quite into music and plays guitar and piano, but thatmost of which she teaches herself.
They both also spend time on the computer.

twinDD's 16 are extremely big on music, fashion, the internet and photography. but their main interest is sewing and they have their own sewing machine that they rattle stuff out on. they have just made a mutual friend a playsuit for her birthday and i was gobsmacked when she came round to try it on, fits like a glove!

DD 13 is always drawing and doodling, and reads a book while doing EVERYTHING. she is also learning to knit and is a rampant feminist in training. her friends are similar, i find it wierd on here when people describe 13 as being young and what some of the 13 year olds do seem very immature, i thought my DD was normal...

DD (13) loves fishing and crabbing. She paints,draws and silk screen prints T shirts and what not. She goes to Church and plays flute to grade 5.

However!

None of the above are hinted at on her Facebook pages which appear to describe her as a total WAG/Gangsta.

DD1 does 6 dance classes a week and sports and yet more dancing at school (doing GCSE dance as an extra curricular activity.)

They also have a cadet force at her school which all year 9s and above are expected to do. They do drill and weapons training and lots of outdoors type of activities.

DD2 does 4 dance classes a week, music theatre classes, belongs to a youth theatre group, plays the guitar and goes to guides.

My DD2 (nearly 14) has been cheerleading for 5 and a half years and LOVES it - it's taken over her life!. She also dances and is starting the guitar next month so she can be the next taylor swift

She does cheerleading and gymnastics at school and unfortunately spends a LOT of time on facebook! She also LOVES baking and cooking which works out well for the rest of us!

She idolises Taylor Swift and LOVES justin bieber so thats all i hear blasting out of her room every evening after school.
