Divorcing Apple

Hi, I want to leave my abusive tech partner Apple… after years of loving everything they do, we just don’t align anymore!

major FFS issues;
if you delete a photo on your phone it is gone from backup on iCloud, I have hundreds of thousands of photos, and I cannot have that amount on my phone, so I have Google photos anyway. Insane.

updates updates fucking updates- my current operating system is 14gb of my storage. Why not factor that in when you make the bastard things?

doesn’t link with my work devices

But I still think the interfaces are more lovely than other brands…

Help me LTB please

Watching with interest. I also want a divorce from Apple.

Easy, buy an android phone and unlock all the capability apple don't allow. I did it years ago and never looked back. Been using Samsung phones since.

When you buy your phone or iPad it’s a good idea to increase your storage if you can afford it. The need for larger storage is apparent in that they have stopped the 60 gbs. and 125 is the usual starting capacity. In proportion to the actual price you can get a lot more for a relatively reasonable price. You can also pay around a pound for a monthly storage if you so wish. The updates are because you are getting a high level of security and constant workings on improvements. Someone who had worked with Apple told me that they were constantly working on these things. I now always buy 256 gbs as a basic. I have about 6 thousand photos and it is a drop in the ocean. The updates lately from iOS 18 to 26 have demanded a bigger capacity but that is because of the greater strides in AI etc. I wouldn’t change my Apple simply because it links my phone to my iPad as it did when I had a Mac. I take a photo when away from home and it is on iPad when I get home. Also if I have a problem there is an Apple Shop and the Genius Bar if one of the usual workers can’t solve the issue. Will Curry’s be as knowledgeable? Please don’t give up on Apple because you may think the grass is greener in some other purchase. The best of luck.

I love android, so much easier. Google pixel phone, Google docs, all linked to my Gmail address. Many android compatible tablets. So much better.

I have always used an android phone too (currently Samsung, previously Motorola), a decision that was confirmed after seeing two of my DDs experience planned obsolescence of their iPhone kick in two days after the warranty expired, a few years ago. Coincidence? I think not.

I’m afraid I can’t help.

I left Apple once and then realised how much I missed it so when my contract was up I returned, cap in hand. We’ve been happily together ever since.

But I use a Mac and really value the synchronicity between my devices. Plus my DC are on Apple and it’s handy us all having the same.

Sorry OP, I’m an enabler….

I have done this twice and returned to Apple. As pp said, when replacing your phone, opt for large storage (if you can afford it).

As the photos on your phone and iCloud are synchronised, it is expected behaviour that if you delete a photo on the phone it will delete on iCloud and visa versa, you also have a 30 day window to recover it.

If your storage is running low, have you tried changing Settings > Apple Account (below your name) > Saved to iCloud > Photos to "Optimise iPhone Storage", as this will store the original on iCloud, and keep a lower resolution preview on your phone, until you click it then the full resolution is downloaded.

I pay for iCloud storage but also have a 1T LaCie external hard drive only for photos as I shoot a lot of 4k holiday videos. Once I moved to Apple it's been a no brainer to stay. Watch, iPad, mac, phone all connected. Yet this connection is what my bff hates.😬

Often the hostility to Apple is caused by mis-understanding the intended functionality, especially with iCloud. For me there are many reasons to prefer Apple, including greater focus on privacy and longevity of support, i.e a 2019 iPhone 11, still supports the latest OS 26, 7 years later.

However I appreciate, for many privacy and long term support isn't a priority and cost is paramount, and they may prefer a more open architecture and not be constrained by vetted apps etc.
