Hey!
Where are you saving all your phone photos if you’re not paying for online storage space, please?
Thanks

I do pay for storage but I also backup photos on to a desktop pc hard drive as well.

Thanks! I’m currently using Google photos and paying but don’t like the idea of having to pay all my life and also don't really like not being able to delete duplicates - you used to be able to do more on Picasa, free, and I’m hoping there’s something similar…

Have to look into transferring all photos from Google to my hard drive. Would be nice if I could access them on my phone too though.

I have an IPhone and use the free iCloud storage but it’s very limited so I back up to my Google Photos, I have it set up to upload everything directly so I don’t have to faff around manually uploading.

I have free unlimited photo storage as part of my Amazon Prime account. The pictures upload automatically.

I back up the Apple photo library once a year to a RAIDed NAS, as a protection if the account became unavailable or highjacked etc.

I'm happy pay for iCloud storage, as I like the connivence of all my devices syncing.

Before you continue to Google Search

I have a hard drive. I also upload to Amazon. I fo pay for cloud storage for my phone as well.

I really, really miss Picasa too @winterlike- it was fantastic. My father-in-law has a very old laptop which still has it so I can use it for editing.

Nourishinghandcream · 08/11/2025 18:06

I don't save any to the cloud, I save them to my PC and a separate hard-drive as backup.

Thanks for responding x

I’ve been thinking about this problem too, because every option seems to have a catch.

Cloud storage is easy because it backs things up automatically and keeps photos available on your phone, but then it becomes a forever monthly bill. A hard drive or PC feels cheaper and more “owned”, but then you have to remember to copy everything, check that it worked, deal with duplicates, and it’s not possible to browse old photos from your phone.

For those of you trying to move away from paid cloud storage, what’s the main reason: the monthly cost, running out of space, fear of losing photos, duplicates/clutter, privacy, or something else?

winterlike · 25/06/2026 07:37

Yes @coldrocketeerit’s the forever bill and not being able to get rid of duplicates/ clutter, which then require you to buy even more space.

Photos on iOS and Mac OS, are able to automatically detect duplicates.

See Photos > Utilities > Duplicates

You can also multi-select and delete the duplicates on MacOS. I've been able to delete thousands of duplicates in seconds.

Users often re-use memory cards without deleting the images, and repeatedly re-import same images multiple times.

Be aware the "Duplicates" option isn't present if no duplicates have been detected.
