QR Codes & Apple Pay?????? 🤯

Please can anyone help me, I'm completely lost.

I'm going on holiday to Singapore on Monday, and it seems that a lot of the cafes and restaurants there have a QR code that you scan to pay.

Do I need an app to do this, or will it somehow 'magic' through to Applepay??

And will I need data to do it???

I've only just mastered how to do Applepay and now this!

I'm completely bamboozled, DD usually helps but has no clue either.

TIA

I’m no tech wizard, but normally qr codes just take you to their website or a page where you can see how much to pay and how to pay it.

You'll need to download a QR code reader app

You'll need to download a QR code reader app

But is that right? Don’t you just hover over it with your camera on?

I have an iPhone and have never done this. I just use the camera to ‘read’ the QR codes.

Most of the QR codes (PayNow, PayLah) in Singapore require a local bank account

You can ask to pay by card / Apple Pay (often might be called PayWave)

Sometimes you need to check in smaller places, some are only QR code or cash but it normally says

pickywatermelon · 17/07/2025 16:17

Or, if it’s just a normal cafe then the QR code might just lead you to the online menu / ordering system - some just do order, some order and pay

Do you remember when life used to be so simple sigh 😂

I’ve not been to Singapore but I would get an eSIM and so you won’t need to worry about using data

Thank you! This really helps.

I'm thinking I will just do cash for the smaller retailers, I'm not sure anyone will have the patience for me faffing with my phone.

Thank you very much also, that's a great idea, I'll have a look at this now.

One final thing, you can use your normal UK bank card / Apple Pay on the bus and MRT (underground) - tap and go same as London

Just remember on the bus to tap out

All taxis should take normal cards, eSIM is useful if you want to use Grab app (SG equivalent of Uber/Bolt)

ElvisPresleysSideburns · 18/07/2025 09:16

Brilliant! Thanks pickywatermelon that's really helpful, we plan using the bus and underground mostly, so good to know.

Have fun!

And if you’re around next Saturday one fun thing to do is go watch the “practice fireworks” for national day down at Marina bay

Oooohh!!! I am and I will! I love fireworks!! Thank you!
