How do I change to a new phone without losing everything on my old phone?

Help I feel like a dinosaur.

In the past when I have changed phones I have gone from Samsung to Samsung and I remember there was some kind of app I used (I think).

My Huawei phone now on its last legs and I have a new Samsung phone to set up.

What do I need to do? I'm so lost and ashamed at how bad my understanding is.

There should be an app on your existing phone called 'Smart Switch', you can download it if there isn't. This is probably the app you're remembering- it's very easy to use, you'll just want to have the two phones next to each other.

First of all, do your back ups. WhatsApp and anything else - photos on an SD card, password app for example.

Then as @xmasdealhunter says, the Smart Switch app should do all the heavy lifting and basically copy everything over.

WhatsApp will need to be restored from your backup when you start up the app.

When you say back ups what specifically should I do. I know it sounds crazy but I genuinely really have no idea what that means.

Is it only my photographs and whatsapps I need to back up? And how do I do that specifically. Will smart switch transfer all my photos on to my new phone? So I'm basically saving them somewhere else to start just in case anything gets lost in the process?

Smart Switch will transfer all the photos over- I've personally never bothered with backing everything up beforehand because as long as you don't immediately wipe your old phone, you've still got access to them. This video is good for explaining how to back whatsapp up:
Once you've used smart switch, just check that all the photos from your old phone have been transferred over to your new one and you're good to go.

I used a cable and cloned my phone everything was transferred in one go. I can still use the old phone too it just doesn't have a sim card. They were 2 Huawei phones though.
