My phone seems to be infected by something. I've run AVG and gone through my apps to see if I've downloaded anything but can't find it.

Any advice please?

What are you seeing that makes you think virus?

Hi,

I have an Android phone and notifications keep coming up telling me to 'Clean my phone before it breaks ' and other messages such as 'you have 18 viruses click here', things like that.

Is this while you're browsing the web? Can you post screenshots?

They're not pop ups. They're notifications. I'll try to post screenshots.

Are these messages not just spam wanting you to click on them in order to infect you?!

No they're not pop ups. They're notifications on my phone. I get notifications to tell me apps have been updated, I've got emails, things like that.

Oh and sign up to "have I been pwned" to see if a company you've got an account with has been hacked and some dodgy company has bought your details and is targeting you to see if you're stupid enough to 'click here to resolve your issues" or whatever.

They told me about the my fitness pal hack and another one recently. I am now getting calls many times a day from 'sky' that I don't believe are from sky.....

These are all Chrome browser notifications. You've allowed the specific (dodgy) website to send you notifications. Block (and please - nobody follow this link if Mumsnet makes it clicky!) "b.re-captha-version-4-15. buzz" from sending you notifications, within your Chrome browser settings, and they'll stop.

You're not infected. You've just accidentally granted notification permissions to some scammy website.

Get rid of McAfee, AVG etc.

There is nothing wrong with your phone at all. These Antivirus apps are just bombarding you with scare pop-ups to try and convince you to buy paid versions.

Not the case here at all! These are all Chrome notifications from a unique malicious website.

CobraChicken · 14/09/2024 05:57

She doesn't even have McAfee. The "fake alert" scam is hoping to hit a proportion of victims who do have McAfee, who might be fooled into thinking that the legitimate application is the source of this "warning"...

Then stop visiting scummy websites, and get rid of AVG. 😀

There's no need whatsoever for 3rd party stuff on Android phones or Windows PC's these days. It's all pointless bloatware aimed at fleecing the gullible and reckless.

CobraChicken · 14/09/2024 06:25

You're entitled to your opinion, but what's it got to do with this thread?

AVG isn't the source of these notifications - Chrome is - and the OP probably has the free AVG... If so, clearly no fleecing happening there.

Also, @poppyzbrite4 hasn't necessarily actively visited any "scummy" website. More likely it was a bad ad on a legit website. There have been plenty of those on this site, over the years - thankfully blocked by my antivirus and/or adblocker.

Thanks! Good to know I'm not infected. How do I block?

You might want to download Malwarebytes and avast.

I've had them for years. You don't get messages like those chrome things (I don't have chrome so no experience if that) but they seem to be good. And free.

I believe this has been resolved. Thanks for your help.

I went to 'notifications' found the website and switched it off. Seems to have worked!
