Gaming pc running out of space - best solution?

Ds has a gaming pc and has used nearly all the space so that the performance seems to be affected and he can't download any more games. I'm wondering what the best and most cost effective solution is? Would an external hard drive help? He likes to play steam games that need to be downloaded as well as Roblox (which is online but also takes some space I think?)

He also does drawing and animating on it which takes up a lot of space.

It might be possible to play games off an external SSD, probably not ideal though. If he has a lot of other files e.g. videos he could move them to an external drive. His best bet would be to either need to either add a new internal drive or upgrade an existing one (assuming it's not a laptop). Or uninstall games he's not playing right now.

  1. Upgrade the internal hard drive - often this is a fairly easy task for someone with a bit of tech knowledge. Or expect to pay someone £50-100 to do it (plus the cost of the hard drive itself).
  2. Get into the habit of removing Steam game files during periods when he's just not into playing that game - and then downloading again when he wants to play.
  3. Get an external SSD to store the animation/drawing output files. Animations, especially can be large files. Worth checking what is using the storage the most.

And it's worth checking this is actually the case. Lack of storage can impact performance but so can other things, such as older graphics cards, RAM limitations etc. It's worth being clear what needs fixing.

RAM, especially is often fairly cheap and easy to upgrade - how cheap and easy depends on how much is already installed in what slots.

Might be worth doing a disk cleanup too as temp files can clog it up.
