Google not allowing child to use SMS on phone

DS (11) has a new android phone. I set up a google account for him to log him in and so I can use Family Link to set controls etc.
When trying to use the SMS app, he keeps getting a 'can't access this service. unavailable for Google Workspace for Education users...'

I've contacted Google Family Link and they've not been much help (gave me list of potential 'fixes' some of which i can't seem to do and others that don't work). I've also questioned why his Google account is a 'Workspace for Education users one' seeing as its nothing to do with his school, I set it up! They couldn't give me an answer.

Has anyone else experienced this and have any tips on how to overcome the issue? Does anyone know why his account has been designated 'workspace for education users'?

I set up a Google account for DS (13) 2 years ago and never had this issue.

What happens if you change his date of birth to make him 13+?

Hi, did you manage to resolve this? I am having the same issue. My child’s phone and google family link worked fine but swapped to a Samsung one and now it won’t allow texts!
