Been given unboxed Alexa - security?

Well actually a family member has been given an Alexa which they want to plug in. I don't know who gave it to them and it was given without any box, instructions etc.
Would some sort of ID/passcode have been in that package?
I'm pretty techie but never used an Alexa, never felt the slightest need.
But to my (concerned) question - is this a security/personal privacy risk?
I understand for instance that there is a "drop in" function which allows folks to listen in through the device.
Who will have control of this function? The original owner? whoever the hell they are.
Surely I can't just download the app and wipe/deregister/reregister the thing or I could do this to anyone elses?
