Can anyone advise me on how to stop this? It's very annoying and several times people have now seen that I've forwarded emails not intended for them to see. How can I just reply to the original email if I have forwarded it? Do I have to copy and paste the whole thing each time if I want to send it elsewhere so it isn't somehow tacked on?
What have I missed here?

Presumably the problem is you're pressing the reply button and not the forward button? These are the instructions for the Android app: https://uk.help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN26404.html and from a browser: https://uk.help.yahoo.com/kb/create-format-send-messages-yahoo-mail-sln35639.html

Basically the reply button has a left pointing arrow and the forward has a right pointing arrow.

My other thought was that maybe Yahoo Mail is presenting these emails to you as part of one conversation: https://uk.help.yahoo.com/kb/turn-delete-conversations-yahoo-mail-sln28055.html

and somehow you're selecting the wrong one to reply to?

I would turn Conversations off and see if that helps.

Thank you. I have checked and my conversations is off, but I didn't realise I had to forward an original email from inbox rather than reply directly to it if I had forwarded it at any point? In Microsoft or Gmail if you forward it it a new separate email is created, so I had no idea with Yahoo it was creating a chain of everyone forwarded. No wonder people get caught out on serious issues at work! Is this just to save space or something?

Yes, I can't really visualise what's happening. Let's imagine:

Email A - from you to people 1, 2 and 3
Email B - a reply from person 1 to you and people 2 and 3
Email C - you forward email B to person 4
Email D - a reply from person 4 to you

There's no reason why people 1, 2 and 3 would be aware that you'd forwarded it. If you do 'reply all' on Email B it should go to people 1, 2 and 3, not 4. If you do reply/reply all on Email D it should go just to person 4.

I haven't used Yahoo Mail in probably 15 years if not more, but is this not what's happening?

My feeling is you're replying to Email B rather than forwarding it, and adding person 4 into the list of recipients. So now everyone is seeing the reply.

So, I get email in from A
I fwd it to B to ask what they think
I then click on the email from A again from my inbox and reply and for some reason it's attached the forwarded message to B underneath their original email.

It has somehow grouped them rather than creating a new email when I forward. I only realised it had done this when I went to reply and it added the person I forwarded's email in on the reply email.

I've just tried this with my own Yahoo account and I can't replicate it.

I sent an email from my Gmail account to my Yahoo account. It shows up in the Inbox. I forwarded that message from my Yahoo account to a second Gmail account. With conversations turned off, that doesn't show up in the Inbox at all (as it's a sent message). With conversations turned on, that does show up in the Inbox and I can view the whole email chain like this.

If I hit the reply button in the blue group, it replies only to the original Gmail account (person A). If I hit the reply button in the red group, it replies only to the second Gmail account (person B).

The only way I could get it to do what you're describing is if on the original email in the inbox I hit reply not forward, and add person B into the 'To' box alongside person A.

Confused I don't know how it is doing it then - I've checked again and conversations is off. Is it maybe when I use my mobile rather than desktop?

Yes I haven't tested it on mobile, but maybe run a test with a few accounts of your own and see if you can spot it.

I'd say that's what it is - mobile not desktop.

Are you sure it's really adding in the forwarded message, and not just grouping the emails by conversations? That's what Outlook does in mobile format & it can be confusing - and a bit heartstopping!

voluntarywork · 30/11/2023 14:22

Yes @EarringsandLipstick it sent the whole email I had sent to asking what they thought back to A when I went back to reply via the initial email from my inbox. I think there must be a difference on mobiles - was doubly embarrassing because I was walking the dog and had spelling errors in the fwd message that I didn't expect anyone elese to see!

I was experiencing the same and was looking for an answer in this thread. This issue occurs in desktop version too. I managed to find a workaround which works well for me. There is an icon for "expand message cards" (image below). Clicking this will collapse the different mail chains separately.
You may click on the original mail in this chain and then reply to it - you won't be seeing the other forwarded contacts. I hope this helps.
