Compact DSLR camera recommendations (that don't cost the earth)

I want to buy a compact DSLR camera - I used to be into cameras and had a big Olympus back in the day but have since lost touch with what is good etc

I'd like to get a point and shoot type DSLR camera because I feel like my phone just isn't cutting it. I print photos taken by my pixel 7 and my partner's iPhone 12 and honestly I'm just not impressed. They look good on screen and kind of rubbish when printed. It was fine for holidays etc but I've had a baby and feel like I want to record these moments with nicer quality pictures.

I was looking at the Canon g7x mark ii but it's pretty pricey. I've found one second hand on Facebook for £400 and I'm seriously considering it but before I commit I wanted to see if anyone has a camera they're happy to recommend, especially if you print photos too.

Watching with interest. Many years ago I was in to photography. I had a Nikon EM but have forgotten anything I knew about photography (three children later)! I would love a dslr but have no clue where to start.

I love my Canon Eos 650D. It's about 8 years old now (I bought it secondhand) but it still produces top quality photos. The Canon Eos range is a great range IMO.

I wouldn't buy a camera from Marketplace though! Go to somewhere like Cex or a secondhand camera shop where you have consumer rights if anything goes wrong (a lot can go wrong, especially if it's been dropped). Problems aren't always immediately obvious.

Also factor in the cost of buying lenses, equipment, editing software, etc. Make sure you try the camera out in the shop before buying it as well.

You can have so much fun with a DSLR!

Why not look at a bridge camera ? Slightly smaller than a slr but with zoom and picture capabilities much better than a phone. Eg Nikon cool pix b600 second hand can be bought for around £200 , connects directly to phone, iPad, laptop via Bluetooth/wifi excellent picture quality etc.
