HEVC Video won't work on laptop

Hi,

I'm not sure if I am posting in the right place, sorry! If anyone could post me to the right place that'd be great. I searched reddit too.

I am trying to clear my google storage, I have a 11 month old and filled my phone with pictures/ videos of him! I bought a hard drive so I could move the videos there, the problem is half of them don't work.

I have turned off HEVC so hopefully no more will save like that. I see I can buy an app so that I can play the videos on my laptop. But I'm worried if I get a new laptop in a few years there might not be an app.

TLDR
So is there a way to convert all the videos to normal videos? They won't open on my mams laptop either.

I haven't used it in quite a while, but VLC has always supported a huge range of codecs. Worth trying that to playback the hvec videos.
It also supports some format conversions, so worth a try.

Thank you, I'll give that a try. I suppose my biggest worry is that they won't work in 20 years and I won't have any way to convert them.
