Transferring VHS video to DVD/downloading

Has anyone done this or can tell me how it's done please, I've got some old VHS tapes (family things not movies) that I'd like to retain but I don't have a video player. Thanks.

Hi - this company did some transfers for us about a year ago, and were really good... they do all sorts of transfers.
