Impossible to just block individual websites on my own iPhone Safari?

So I’d like to block some individual websites on the Safari browser on my own iPhone.

It looks like there is no possibility to do this via Screentime unless you turn on parental controls and block a huge number of sites chosen by them.

But it’s my own phone and I don’t need that. I just want to block a few particular sites I habitually visit but wish I didn’t, mostly tabloid news sites.

There are third party apps like BlockSite and Freedom but I think they either require you to install their own browser, or they’re as much as £20 a month.

So, have I got this right and there’a really no way of blocking your own choice of individual sites (but only those sites) on an iPhone?

You might be able to add individual websites using screen time.

Thats the problem, it seems impossible, unless you turn on their “Limit Adult Website” filter and block millions of websites that they have chosen.

But I do not want to turn on their parental control, I just want to block a few sites entirely of my own choosing.

So for example I’d like to block Mail Online and Reddit, but still be allowed to Mumsnet which might fall foul of a keyword filter.

I don’t think there’s any way of doing it (unlike on a desktop PC).

Funny how little control our phones actually give us!

But you can turn on “Limit adult websites” and then add specific websites.

Or you could just not go to the Reddit and Fail websites?

But as I said, doing that will block millions of websites which I haven’t chosen.

I only want to block a small number of websites which I have specifically chosen.

So, it sounds like it’s impossible.

There is an app called Blocksite which seems to do what you want. Whilst you can limit access via keywords, you don't have to. You could just as easily choose to block specific sites such as the Daily Mail. It works with most browsers including Safari.

Yes maybe that app (which I mention in my first post) is the only option. It’s £20.99 for one month or £38.99 for a year so I haven’t tried it.

This is my first time owning an iPhone and having heard so much about how user-friendly Apple products are, I’m shocked that it’s not possible to do this anyway in Safari. Surely it must be common for adults to want to block particular sites on their own phones.

Why block a few websites on your own phone? Just dont visit them!

weathervane1 · 22/04/2023 13:06

Apologies OP - I was looking at the "free" version of Blocksite that has adverts running... but upon further enquiry, that also charges you in-app. Considering the price of a decent anti-virus program, these simple apps that actually don't do very much appear quite expensive.

This is the free version.
