Has Microsoft changed its settings and not told me??

Got a new red line on my hotmail page on bottom left saying I've used 7.5 g Of 5 gb available and then red button saying get more storage!!? Argh 🤨

Yes, got an email on it back in early Jan. Change to plans etc., but a big change was including Outlook in your storage calculation.
