I want to buy an IPad second hand but decent enough for my 8 year old for Christmas. I'm looking on CEX but no idea if they are any good or which version I need.
Mostly for games and things, but I obviously want it to be updateable (that might not be a word lol) and be in good order.
Any wise advice?

I’d recommend an iPad mini for a child. It’s a bit smaller and lighter so easier to hold. But the graphics, processing, storage are all the same as a full size iPad.
The iPad mini 5s from 2019 are going for £229 on music magpie

Hmm still a bit pricey I think. It's just the kindle he has is a bit rubbish and he takes good care of things so I know it would be ok.

Kindles are complete rubbish. My DH was a loyal long time kindle user until he noticed that a game we both play ran extremely slow on his kindle compared to my iPad. So I got him an iPad last Christmas!

So, the iPad mini is also the cheapest iPad you can buy. The iPad mini 5 is from 2019. I would not go any older though than 3yrs old as the thing with pads and tablets is that you cannot replace the battery. Once it dies (and they all degrade over time), the pad or tablet is shot and good only for recycling. So it’s not a savings to buy any second hand pad or tablet that is older.

The runner up brand for quality & built in parental controls would be a Samsung Galaxy tablet. I’d recommend the A7 Lite 8.7inch one (again better for small hands compared to a 10inch heavier pad/tablet). Argos has this one on sale for £119 now, brand new. It’s last years model so a bit cheaper, and being brand new the battery will have all its life ahead of it.

Here is a review of it
It is an entry level tablet.
www.androidauthority.com/samsung-galaxy-tab-a7-lite-review-3207547/

“In particular, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is a great option for younger kids and older folk who are likely to be less put off by the low-res display and weak performance. Samsung Kids is a Samsung-exclusive “kids mode” app that allows you to turn your device into a safe virtual environment and entertainment hub. Furthermore, it doesn’t require a great deal of processing power, meaning the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is a prime candidate to be turned into a dedicated Samsung Kids device.”

Thanks for taking the time to do that, much appreciated
