Broadband - help with installation

I'll try and explain but I'm not tech savvy so apologies .

I wanted a broadband / Wi-Fi connection at home and after two
no show visits the engineers turned up and did the wiring from the pile outside into the property finishing by giving me a hub on my desk and a password . They then said they'd need to come back and finish but they didn't show up . I then booked another appointment they didn't turn up , same thing again appointment booked and they didn't turn up . When I tried to log on with the password they gave me I couldn't log on because it said something like DNS failure .

After so many no show appointments I'd like to use another supplier if possible . With where I'm at with the cable / hub is it possible to go elsewhere or do this shower have to finish the task .

DNS failure means the hub can't reach a domain name server which is what it needs to do to translate your web page into the numbers the internet uses.

Are you getting indicators on your router that it's connected to the internet (usually green lights etc). If you're not sure, look up the manual online and it will tell you.

If you are, then you can go into the router as admin and change the DNS address to that of Opendns (Opendns has a website that shows you how to do this) and if it works then you're set.

I'd be surprised if it does work though as you should be getting billed for a working service and they don't tend to switch you on until all that's sorted.

On the plus side, if it doesn't work, you have the cable and access point into your house so another provider has less to do. You can also use the router as switch or extender or spare or sell it. So, yes you can go elsewhere. Just tell the current lot you're doing so because they have failed to show up and finish the work
