Broken laptop - photos

Toddler has just pulled laptop off the side. It was charging and now the dock for the charge is all cracked and broken. The laptop doesn't work without being plugged in.

I have some photos on there which aren't backed up. Will it be possible/easy to get them off it?

One answer and one question. Yes, it is relatively easy to get your files / photos off although if it is totally broken and cannot be powered up in any way, then you will need someone who has a hard disk caddy - basically it's a matter of removing the hard disk and mounting it into a caddy that can then be attach to another PC to rescue your files. The question - it wasn't obvious from your post exactly what is broken - what do you mean by "dock"? You also say that it Won't work without being plugged in - if this means that it does work when it is plugged in, then ignore my first point and go into Windows and back your photos to the cloud or to a DVD or external hard drive etc.

... and if all else fails and you can't find anyone with a caddy, I can do it for you if you live in the NW of the UK (after lockdown obvs). Also, small independent PC shops may be able to do it for you - the larger ones such as CurrysPCWorld are unlikely to offer this service.

Oh, and if it's only to rescue photos, you can often swap the hard drive from the broken laptop to a non broken one temporarily - there may be some issues with the software recognising the different machine spec but it will most likely boot up and enable you to copy the files before swapping the disks back to their original machines.

And a local laptop repair shop maybe able to mend the broken part.

Hi @msmith501 thanks for replying.

We've actually sorted it now, but thank you anyway Smile

No problem. On my iPhone it doesn't show when your post was posted so I wasn't sure if it was old or recent. Glad it's sorted.
