How to erase find my iPhone from iCloud for a non functional phone

DS's phone went through the washing machine so we need to claim on the insurance

We need to erase find my iPhone through iCloud before they will complete the claim but when I try this it says the settings will be erased when the phone connects to the internet. The phone won't turn on as it was washed!

Any ideas? They won't process the claim until I have erased find my iPhones

I don’t think you can erase the phone without connecting but you can turn off find my iphone if that’s what they mean?

Log into icloud, go to setting, devices, remove the relevant phone from the icloud account.
