I conceded - and seeing as she starts secondary in Sept I bought DD an iPhone for her b'day. She has used £4 in 2 days and I'm wondering how because she's been attached to wifi for most of the time, sent about 20 texts, no phone calls. I've just switched off mobile data.

How much do your DCs spend on PAYG or account monthly?

What network are you using?

dancemom · 08/05/2016 14:37

Is she streaming videos? Dd used up all her data in 2 days when she first got her iPhone! Even though she was in wifi area it was using her 4G. She new switches off her mobile data when she's at home and only turns it on when she goes out.

How do you guys monitor use? I'm not worried about calls but it's internet use I'm concerned about.

I put a £7.50 bundle of credit each month with Giffgaff and I check dds phone every night (or when I remember) she's not secretive so it's easy.

Not like in our day, eh?

Hello.
No, not really like in the old days :)

I'm assuming you may have done some of these, but I will make a list anyway. More information is always better than too little.

  1. Check with the provider if internet filters are on. (if your phone is registered to you they may be off). All the UK Mobile Operators have to provide Internet filters on their phones to help block accessing material that is potentially
harmful to children.
  1. Make sure your child knows about the dangers of sharing location services with friends. This is a cool feature for parents because you may check where she is, but it also can be abused badly.
  1. Make sure you have a serious conversation about never giving mobile number to people she just met (because stranger means something different to kids) AND most often forgotten, NEVER hand mobile phone to anyone they don't know very well. Planting unwanted stuff on a mobile phone is very easy.
  1. Turn off Bluetooth. Usually not needed and can be abused.
  1. Contact mobile phone operator and bar premium rate numbers (you know, the short ones 5-7 digits). They can look very simple, but unaware kid may actually spend hundreds easily, just voting for music on the radio, or answering quiz questions...
  1. Make sure you explain to your child how spam messages look like, because some can be dressed in genuine colours and look pretty convincing. Teach her never to respond to messages which ask her to send an SMS with STOP, or OPT-OUT.

Hope these help :D
