On a scale of 1 - 10, how painful is it?

Never had a tattoo before, I’d like to think I’m fairly pain tolerant though..

It depends what design of tattoo, anything with a lot of shading/colouring in hurts more than a simple tattoo and anything on a bone hurts more than anything fleshy.

Pelvic bone as in you want your mons pubis tattooed? It's likely to be vv sore over the bone, worse the lower you go, over the symphysis pubis would be seriously hardcore.

I think I must be misunderstanding though, that'd be a spectacularly unusual placement for a first tattoo!

On the hip bone but low down, so right on the inner thigh next to the ‘intimate’ area I suppose would be the best way of describing it.

Ok. So more or less the the area marked in red? Parts of that would be reasonable in terms of pain but the area I've marked in black is a nightmare zone. It's usually left open in traditional Japanese body suits and for good reason!

It's a very painful area to have worked on and technically challenging too because the skin is rather thin. It's also a very difficult area to heal a tattoo.

TBH I'd have a serious rethink.

I have stomach/ hips/ and then all the way round to my back done. Weirdly I don’t think that much sorer than getting your back done . Although my tatooist thought I was rock hard at I did an eight hour stint.
Yet on one two hour session on my back I was almost crying .
Inner thighs though .. I think they are 10/10 for pain .
I would be stocking up on the Elma cream and clingfilm .

If you've never been tattooed before then it's kind of hard (and pointless?) to give an idea of the relative pain of different areas. Especially as different people find different places more/less painful than others.

Everyone is different. Tattoos hurt in most places. If you want a tattoo, it's gonna hurt. But thousands of people go through it every day – it's clearly a bearable pain.

Something like this, although probably smaller flowers, maybe something more viney like sweet peas or something...

Am I able to use Emla or similar?
Or do I just have to breathe through it...

You'll be fine. It hurts but it's not the worst pain in the world! And when it's finished, the pain basically goes away straight away.

You can use numbing creams (I don't know what Emla is but I googled it and it says it's Lidocaine, which is the most often recommended for tattoos) but lots of artists won't want to. Google it if you want more opinions on it – everyone seems to have their own!

Also anywhere that's bony is worst. My ribs felt like I would faint and vomit at the same time - imagine it like a scald, but it lasts a long time and moved in a line.

@Bunnybigears I found my shading didn't hurt much at all, it was the initial design that killed

I’m so thankful I’ve never wanted a tattoo. My pain threshold is WAY too low.

The sexist tattoo I’ve ever seen in a female sounds tacky, but it was tiny paw prints 🐾 going down from her hip into her low slung jeans 🐾 it was so well placed and minimal.
It’s the only tattoo that’s ever made me think hmmm.

...then I remembered I didn’t have her gorgeous body 🤣

But I tell you something for nothing, there’s no way on this planet they’d be coming anywhere near my inner thigh 😳 way too soft and ‘thin’ (skin not thing. Sadly).
