Gerbils, definitely. Hamsters are more bitey and sleep all day.

Oh seeker, guinea pigs smell lovely, especially if you give them top quality hay.

Still sticking with hamster here at this stage...

hamsters only bite if they are not handled carefully and regually

just cleaned our 2 out and now they are running about with pouches full of food and dont know what to do with it

Hmm, OK, maybe I am biased as the only hamsters I've had were the class ones we brought home for the holidays!

Ours is lovely and tame and has never bitten.
Gerbils have that spiny tail thing going on too
