Hamster drinking problem?

Just cleaned out hamster number 2 as his cage stunk to find his water bottle empty and everything soaked. I have marked the bottle and it doesn't seem to have been leaking but how can one small hamster drink so much in 2 days and make such a mess? Could there be something wrong with him?

Okay, so somehow the new water bottle is leaking.

How long can a hamster go without water as I can't get to the petshop and then home until after 4?

Sometimes the water leaks if you haven't filled it right to the top - needs some kind of suction thing.

It will be fine for a few hours don't panic... they used to live in the desert remember?!

Will go and fill to top and try but how does that work when they start to drink it?

I will get Dh to clen out the cage tonight. I am not doing it twice in one day!

Hamsters don't drink out of water bottles in the wild - couldn't he jsut hane a bowl for the afternoon?

I wouldn't care but I rescued him from the adoption bit but I suppose it isn't his fault the bottle leaked. New bottle purchased at one pound 9p great expense and hamster is currently in the kitchen awaiting DH cleaning him out. It is amazing how smelly hamster bedding is when it is only wet with water.

Mine used to do the same- was puzzled until I realised that he sat on top of water bottle and therefore all the water leaked out!

If he is doing this, fix the bottle on the outside of the cage - should stop him getting the cage wet.

The bottle is on the outside so it can't be that. the new bottle seems fine if a little haphazardly attached to the cage.

I'd only worry when you find cans of Special brew hidden under the sawdust.

Stuff him, he has just bitten me!
