Guinea pigs killed

We’ve had a small herd of piggies over the years, we were down to our last pig and managed to find her another old girl as a companion. I got her from a mum at school.

Neighbours on the corner are farm workers and have 5 working spaniels that are quite often just running free with nobody keeping an eye on them! They’ve come onto our property on numerous occasions previously. The last time 2 of them had blood all around their mouths.

My dad lives inbetween us and them and he told me yesterday morning he’d got up to them being in his garden.

Looking out at the pigs run I thought it was a bit strange their food bowl was out on the grass as it’s quite heavy. Go over to move them onto fresh grass and they’re gone 😫 run has been destroyed, these dogs have forced their way in, turned everything upside down and presumably killed our piggies (hair etc all over the floor 😫) and then forced their way back out through the wire in 2 places.

My initial thought was a fox but there is white fur on the wire where they’ve pushed it out. I am absolutely gutted and my poor daughter was in pieces 😭

Report them to the dog warden for having out of control animals.

Didn’t think about this, thank you!

No advice, just commiserations. How dreadfully sad. 😔

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 18/09/2025 08:27

Absolutely terrible, OP, I am so sorry.

SeaAndStars · 18/09/2025 08:28

That's dreadful. I'm so sorry for you and your daughter.

Bloody irresponsible people not keeping their dogs under control.

lauribec · 18/09/2025 10:43

Honestly so sad about the situation, it’s awful to think about what they have been through 😩 we were going to bring them into their winter housing last weekend but postponed it to this weekend so my OH could do a bit of maintenance to it. Kicking myself!

So used to doing lunchboxes/meals and having peelings/chopped up veg and shouting for someone to take it out to the pigs, realisation hit this morning when it dawned on us we have nobody to give it to anymore 😭

I'm so sorry - that's horrendous. How old is your poor daughter? And yes something needs doing about those dogs. I used to keep guineas and know exactly what you mean about the veg peelings!

TessTickle0 · 18/09/2025 11:35

Mine used to come squeaking up to the kitchen door for a carrot.
One day the back yard gate got left.open and they both escaped..couldn't find them.
So sad and yes it's the sudden thought when peeling veg eat that they are gone

I'm really sorry for your loss. I agree that the dogs were not being properly looked after and it's appropriate to follow up.

Foxes usually have white around their jaws to under their belly. This means you can't actually prove a fox didn't get in there first (and disturb the dogs, meaning they got out to chase the fox). I'd definitely mention the killing to the dog owner though (fox or not).
So sorry, we rehomed one and I used to love it calling to me every morning when I came down with its food.
