Hi!

We got our Syrian boy on Tuesday. I was told to leave him to explore and settle in his new enclosure for 24 hours then being to start hand taming him. I tried a piece of cucumber on my hand last night but he still seemed so frightened so I removed my hand and just spoke to him softly for a while.

when did you start hand taming do you have any tips or tricks for me?

tia

When we had hamsters when the children were younger, we used a handling tube at first to take the hamster out of the cage. (They usually don’t like a hand descending on them from above.)
I used a Pringles tube, cut short, and put it in the cage, the hamster would run in and it can then be gently lifted out of the cage. Sit down with it on your lap and wait patiently and the hamster will come out in its own time to explore your lap.

That’s fantastic, thank you, we will try that this evening.
