Well, rodents love to chew.... How big is his cage? I know you say it's really large, but what are the dimensions?

WhatsitWiggle · 09/12/2023 22:56

How big is the cage?

Although my most recent Syrian had a cage 100cm x 50cm, and still destroyed absolutely everything in it - chewed the large wooden wheel, any decoration placed inside, the wooden house, the plastic clips to hold the wire part of the cage to the plastic bottom, and the wires themselves. She was 5 months when we got her, and had spent that time in a small glass tank. We thought she'd be delighted with her new home but she spent every waking minute chewing it!

DogDream · 09/12/2023 22:56

Chewing the cage often means they are trying to escape. They need a huge amount of space. Usually even the ‘largest’ cages sold by pet stores like P@H aren’t big enough, are you certain it’s large enough? https://www.hamsterwelfare.com/cage-advice-and-evidence/

toastofthetown · 09/12/2023 23:15

Does your hamster have everything in this care guide? If so then your hamster may need a bigger enclosure. The minimum size are just that, and some hamsters will need more space to be happy.

That is most definitely not a "really large cage" for a syrian hamster OP. If you get a much bigger one and put fewer toys in it and a deep amount of substrate, he will be much less likely to chew repetitively.
Cages like that shouldn't be sold IMO, especially with misleading names that suggest they are large when they really are not.

Seriouslynonono · 09/12/2023 23:50

animals should never be in cages

poor bloody thing

Kellyanngault · 09/12/2023 23:55

Thanks will get bigger one 👍

I actually agree but if I didn't purchase it someone else would and at least I know I will do everything to take care of it

I bought a gigantic fish tank for my old hammy.
Lots of room and no escaping!

She had chewed her way out of two big hamster cages before that.

No if you didn’t purchase it one less would have been sold and this cruel industry would have been a bit less profitable. As it is, you’ve incentivised more breeding and more desperate lives in captivity of sentient and smart creatures.

Kellyanngault · 10/12/2023 00:14

So you honestly think if I didn't buy it pets at home would then not sell it and that would make a difference 🤔 that's not how it works I'm afraid it's a business and they would sell it no matter what one person can't change the world I'm afraid if you are so against it why even bother with this chat

Seriouslynonono · 10/12/2023 00:17

If people stop buying pets, people will stop selling them.

Simple.

WinterDeWinter · 10/12/2023 00:19

individuals do eventually change things.

im bothering with this chat because I’m bothered about a cruel trade/unethical pet ownership. I don’t want more animals to suffer as yours is right now.

Kellyanngault · 10/12/2023 00:29

Wouldn't say its suffering it would struggle to survive in the wild but thanks for your opinion

Look at Victoria Rachel on YouTube. She takes really good care of her hamsters. Your hamster is stressed from being in too small of a cage. They should really be in bin cages with deep bedding so they can bury in it

Fullofpudding · 10/12/2023 03:03

In the wild they would travel about 10 miles a day!! Poor thing being in a cage like that.

Fullofpudding · 10/12/2023 03:06

It needs to be in something like this as a minimum

We used a very large plastic tub- the kind that comes with a lid for storage. Too tall to climb out of but a good space for running around, and it's not possible for them to chew. Ours was very happy and lived for several years, way beyond life expectancy. I thought part of the reason was we gave him lots of fresh veggies and he had a big home to run around in.

Yes ours was like this, not quite as large and fancy but close! Doable on a budget even.

If nobody purchased hamsters nobody would breed them. That's exactly how it works. The "one person can't change the world attitude" is really puts me off a person.

When I was a child my DM learned the hard way that a huge tank is the way to go if you want to keep a hamster.

Thanks fir your opinion but not the answer to my question so pointless

Not pointless - you now can't claim you don't know that this is a cruel trade, and hopefully when this poor thing dies after a sad unnatural life, you won't participate in it again.

Gradually as society becomes more aware and thinks through the suffering, the trade will stop for lack of buyers.

Kellyanngault · 10/12/2023 15:08

It was born in captivity it doesn't know anything else so wouldn't survive in the wild so unless yous want to help with my question stop boring me with pointless moaning yawn
