Guinea pig Ilness

3 - 3.5 year old boar (ish - rescue so unsure of exact age) Displaying signs of respiratory infection on Sunday (only lethargy to begin). Spoke to vet who told us to monitor. Spoke to them again Monday and they had us in Tuesday morning.

He was given antibiotics, anti inflammatories and a hydration injection under the skin (slow release over 72 hours). We also bought the critical care food recommended by the vet.

Yesterday he seemed a bit better, walking round, even a bit of a trott around for half and hour and eating hay. But most of the time before that just lying there.

We’ve given the meds as prescribed. We’ve been syringe feeding the food and water.

However today on and off he has trembled when walking - the walking isn’t a lot at all. He is very lethargic again. And I’ve noticed heavy breathing. He has not eaten anything today other than the food we’ve given him via syringe despite there being food readily available and very near him.

He is being kept away from the other Guinea pigs (he doesn’t share a hutch with any of them - he can be aggressive when in the same hutch but the set up we have for them means they are side by side through chicken wire/fence. They are all very happy with that set up. He gets the feeling of being with others without being with others.).

Anyway, my question is, would you put him back in his hutch? I’m
worried his lethargy is due to depression of not being with the others.

Or could he still have the infection?

To add, the trembling isn’t continuous - just sometimes when he moves. His hydration is better than it was when he was taken to the vet.

He is certainly weeing but opened his bowels only a couple of times.

Any advice much appreciated.

Thank you!
