Hamster weeing blood

We only got him last week from pets at home, he seems fine, eating, drinking, sand baths, exercising, playing with his toys, happy being stroked, sleeping fine etc. But last night when I got him in his play pen (we get him out for a cuddle, run around and maze play every evening) and he was weeing blood 😭 I’ve contacted the vets and they said £45 for a consultation and then x amount more for medication. We just can’t afford it right now though..

we can’t get him insured for another week (he’s under the age threshold just yet) and don’t get paid under 25th 😢 I feel awful, we’ve all fallen in love with him and it’s breaking my heart that he’s like this.

Any advice or experience in this please?

@Stressyfab thank you. Yes I did this (diluted unsweetened cranberry juice). Thank you.

Try calling your vet and see if you can have a payment plan, we’ve had to do it before too. I understand unexpected bills, we’re skint this month too. But my lovely wee cat ended up in the vet this morning and I had no choice but to pay £86. She has conjunctivitis and an ingrown claw so had to have them clipped. Expensive for what it is. I have 3 cats and we’ve been stuck before too we had to use money from our ‘emergency fund’. I hope your hamster is ok OP. It’s really horrible when they’re ill.

The insurance , even if you’d started it wouldn’t have covered this @Theresamooselooseabootthishoose as they usually have a 2 week period where you can only claim for accidents not illness .

He isn’t actually, he’s in a double barrelled hamster heaven, with a connecting specially made 100cmx100cm cage, loved, fed, watered, cleaned regularly and will from next week be insured. It’s only this week (which is unfortunate as we had an unexpected dentist bill this month) that I can’t afford the vet bill.

Please save your ignorance of working class people. I assure you we are responsible and caring people who work hard.

Quit with that nonsense it’s about being a responsible owner!

See if you can agree a payment plan. Small animal consultancy plus a bit of metacam shouldn’t cost a fortune.

Theresamooselooseabootthishoose · 17/04/2023 14:05

He’s in at the vets.. 3:30 😊 Just incase anyone is in a similar predicament- animal trust do a pet plan and consultations are free and you only pay for the medication, he’s now on a full pet plan (yay!). Thanks again for your responses. I’ll hopefully get on with a positive update.

Why on earth would you purchase a living creature without any means of paying for its health care

Poor hamster. Try and contact pdsa vets and see if you qualify for low cost treatment

This. I get that circumstances change and people split up, lose their jobs etc, but you've only just bought the poor thing and you won't pay £45 to see what's wrong with it? Some people really shouldn't be allowed to have pets.

Theresamooselooseabootthishoose · 17/04/2023 14:06

@Mammma91 ah I’m sorry! I hope they’re feeling better now (ouch!)

Oh lovely!! Hope all turns out well

Theresamooselooseabootthishoose · 17/04/2023 14:07

@sanityisamyth its not that I won’t, it’s that I couldn’t unfortunately. He’s booked in at the emergency vets thankfully 😅

@Stressyfab sorry the ‘working class’ part wasn’t to do with money, but more the insinuation that because we don’t have money also means I’m cruel enough to put him in a hamster cage like someone previously said 😔

Hope he gets well soon @Theresamooselooseabootthishoose

Theresamooselooseabootthishoose · 17/04/2023 15:59

Thank you so much. Just been seen, it’s a UTI. Vet hopes he’ll make a full recovery. I need plenty of wish me lucks for getting 5 days of antibiotics in him 😵‍💫😆

Might I add, hamsters should be in home made bin cages. Your 100x100 is still very inadequate and I doubt you did research. There are some good YouTubers who know about hamster care

How Is a 100x100cm cage woth a topper inadequate for a hamster? And how is that worse than a bin cage? A bin cage is the bare minimum really

I'm glad you have got him seen by your vets, wishing hum a speedy recovery

I would query with pets at home as I'm pretty certain when we got our gerbils they said any problems in the first 6 weeks were covered, and according to citizens advise essentially its as if you bought a faulty product and they should refund you the vet bills. First 48hrs is BS

Theresamooselooseabootthishoose · 17/04/2023 16:34

@StrugglingWeight thank you, I appreciate that. He actually has 180cm floor space with platforms above, so he’s definitely got adequate space. I will email pets at home customer service too and query it. Thanks again!

So glad to see the positive update! Best wishes for successful med administration, and a fast recovery for wee hamster. ❤️

Beamur · 17/04/2023 20:16

Glad it seems to be treatable. I had to give my guinea pig a course of meds and it turned out to be incredibly easy - medicine must have been sweet as GP happily hoovered it up.

Floralnomad · 18/04/2023 14:49

How is the hamster today @Theresamooselooseabootthishoose , are you managing to get the medication given ok .

Theresamooselooseabootthishoose · 18/04/2023 15:03

Ah thank you for checking in. He’s great.. no blood in his wee, medication goes in his water bottle so just trying to make sure he’s drinking. I did sprinkle some on his veg so hoping that helps.
