Rat cage question

Hi there. Looking for ideal cage for 3 baby rats. I'm looking at the Little Friends Windsor 5-Levels 100cm Small Animal Rat Cage, but it says that the bar spacing is 1.1cm and 1.8cm at the top, is this too big for babies?

It will depend on the babies to be honest. One of mine was an escape artist and possibly could have squeezed out.

You could add some temporary chicken wire / mesh over any bigger gaps until they've grown? That's what I did.

They may be able to squeeze out of the top until they're a little bigger. The 1.1cm will be absolutely fine but you might want to wrap the top for at least a little while or even longer if they are girls.

Thank you!

Look at the reviews.

I've seen a few on Amazon I'd use - one seemed amazing but the bar spacing is too large .

The little friends ones seem best .

On the advice of my breeder, I'm going for this...

There’s a very nerdy Facebook page called rat cage set ups where all your questions will be answered and you can spend hours looking at peoples cages!!

Ooh I'll take a look...

I've learnt that rats need floor space instead of height so chunky is better than tall iyswim

If you have a good breeder you probably know already, but just in case - they love layers and levels, as long as there's a few bits where they can stretch full being the more hammocks and stuff you cram in the happier they will be. Most 'open space' is a waste to them.

Not quite, floor space is more important for older rats, climbing space is really important as well. Though the cage you're going with will be brilliant as it provides both sufficiently. We had the Savic Royale Suite which looks like it's similar dimensions. Boys in half and girls in the other half. We had loads of cages over the years, chicken wire was a good temporary solution for girls in cages with slightly too big bar spacing but spending the extra on some like like you are is totally worth it for the long run.

Lots of hammocks for breaking falls is important! We had one young girl who kept hurting her arm despite any and all things we put in place to break falls when she was tiny. And she'd continue to climb even when she couldn't use it, so we had to buy a new hospital cage for her that had a huge footprint but low ceiling height 🙄Once she was a bit bigger she was fine, but she kept managing to slip between the hammock and the wall and silly tiny gaps that we didn't think would be possible to fall through.

I have the liberta explorer, had that for years and years. Our rats loved it. Makes me sad that it just sits in the garage flat packed.
Through the years we have had hundreds of pet rats living at home. I miss them every day.
The best critters as pals, my first girl didn't like the cage so used to sleep next to me in my bed 😂 I could still cry over her and she would always be my number one.
I'd just say lots of hammocks and enrichment, my girls used to love a rabbit treat ball to roll around and get the treats..... til they realised they could chew it up and get the whole feast 😂
