Anyone know what these are? Found 6 of them in my back garden. Seam friendly and like cheese!

I seen 6 of these all snuggled together in my back garden. Very small as I approached they didn’t budge, I went and got some cheese and they shared it. I handed it to them and they took it from my hand with their hand. I think they are super cute what ever they are anyways! But I’m pregnant and my hormones are a mess so I’m guessing I should stay well away. Are they just mice? Baby rats? Voles?

Some kind of mouse. Don't look like baby rats.

(I work with mice and rats)

NighghtmareNeighbour · 15/09/2022 08:57

Look like wood mice to me.

KosherDill · 15/09/2022 09:00

They are field mice.

Can you make them a little den, even a cardboard box with a hole in it, to deter predators?

Bagpuss2022 · 15/09/2022 09:07

How are anyone finding them cute made my skin crawl then again I’m traumatised from a experience years ago when rats took hold of our Armed forces house attic.
im averse to anything rodent like now

ButteryNuts · 15/09/2022 08:26

Very very cute. I wouldn't feed or touch them, though. Since they're in your garden you will encourage them and they might move in and cause damage to your home. How brave they are is concerning too, some transmissible diseases can cause that such as Toxoplasmosis.

Quick, OP! Run and hide!! Better still, move house! 🙃

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 15/09/2022 09:10

Just came on to see the seams...

ThistleSifter · 15/09/2022 09:12

I think they may be shrews; had one in my house earlier this year - they’re like tiny mice.

Pixiedust1234 · 15/09/2022 09:12

Definitely NOT rats. Very probably Field mice. If you have foxes they won't last long

CandyLeBonBon · 15/09/2022 09:15

How big are they op?

Pixiedust1234 · 15/09/2022 09:21

Pity these pictures are in black and white but the description underneath is pretty accurate.

Points worth mentioning is field and wood mouse are the same animal. Shrews have long pointy snouts and voles tend to have a reddish hint to the fur

They are just over an inch id say then the tail. I’d love to make a house for them to keep them safe from cats/foxes. Nobody can get into my garden but behind my garden is a dog walking area which is full of wild life including deer. Then I have 20ft conifers all along the back of my garden. At first when I seen them they were sitting in a spot of autumn sunshine, they didn’t seam scared of me at all, I thought perhaps they were just so young and didn’t understand danger yet. Of course I wouldn’t hurt them but my neighbours many cats would no doubt 😞.

They are young mice OP. A cat or similar has probably disturbed the nest and maybe 'relocated' the mother. Are they still there? Do you think they could look after themselves?
If not could you take them to a rescue before local cats/crows/rooks etc find them?

BlueBunny23 · 15/09/2022 09:31

This may be a better photo I took

@BloodyHellKen I don’t think they can as tbey seam friendly and scared the way they were huddled together and took food from me which made me wonder why isn’t the mother here and that something awful had happened to her

They look like field mice to me. Strange to be out in the open in the day though. Bit worried the cat has taken their mum....

Bornin1989 · 15/09/2022 09:41

Baby mice - very cute - I'd build a shelter and feed them (outside so they don't come in), but I used to have pet rats so I'm a big fan of rodents ❤️

workinmums · 15/09/2022 09:41

Adorable? NO.
They look like rats to me. I'd be moving after find them in my garden😪

OrlandointheWilderness · 15/09/2022 09:42

I reckon baby field mice. They are properly adorable!

Sickoffamilydrama · 15/09/2022 09:56

Look like mice to me, rats are more pointy in the face. See attached photo of DD rat as a baby.

Either way you probably want to be careful not to do anything that will encourage them to come into your house as mice are a nightmare to get rid of. Rats are easier but you do have to think of new ways each time you want to catch them, (we always used humane traps for Mice/Rats)they learn quickly!

Rats make brilliant pets BTW the best pet I've ever had and I've had a few.

Look up the pictures of Simon Dell www.facebook.com/Georgethemouseinalogpilehouse/ pops up sometimes and makes me smile.

spiderlight · 15/09/2022 09:57

Oh bless them! Baby mice of some kind. I think @BloodyHellKen is right. We had some baby mice once after we'd inadvertently caught and relocated their mother - they all came wobbling out into the kitchen one by one over a couple of days and weren't at all scared of me, and I felt so guilty that I ended up hand-rearing them on kitten milk for a fortnight and then releasing them where we'd taken their mum. They might not have survived but I tried.

Twilightimmortal · 15/09/2022 10:00

They look like mice that I have tried to keep out of my flat.
I would be freaking out if u saw them and would be putting down traps and poison.

BeenHereForYonkyDoodles · 15/09/2022 10:03

Beautiful baby Mice! They're clearly too tiny to be alone.
Thank you for looking after them op. You should pop a box with access holes over them to keep the crows etc away, with some soft tissue bedding/little water dish and some food inside. Id lay off the cheese as they're lactose intolerant, bird seed or at a push cereal would be better . I'd give mum a few hours to come back and if not facebook should list some local sanctuaries for you.
They are super cute!

AppleIsMyName · 15/09/2022 10:08

Just when I thought I'd seen it all on MN. People are harbouring rats now?
Interesting...

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/09/2022 10:09

They look like mice, not rats. The box is a good idea to look after them to see if their mum comes back.
