Substrate for rats

What do you use in the base of your cage? We had been using shredded cardboard but there are no local suppliers and delivery is very expensive.

Years ago I used to keep fancy mice and used Aubiose. It was very good at absorbing stuff. I could pick up a bale from the local horse supplies shop which lasted absolutely ages. Need to have somewhere dry to store it though.

They now sell it on Amazon, but I have no idea if it is cheaper elsewhere.

We use Carefresh and really like it, but it is expensive. Going to look up Abiouse, not used that before.
