My wonderful Mumsnetters!

Long story short have rescued a 4 month old house rabbit , male, from a animal hoarder.
Realistically can't keep him as dogs in my house but he gets on with cats!
Me and daughter have spent the morning phoning animal centres, all full and have waiting lists. Even tried our vets and pets at home.
Can anyone advise please . He's a lovely bunny

I cant help you, but I volunteer in animal rescue and we turn animals away and have waiting lists now.

It's a combination of people not thinking about the commitment of pet ownership, exacerbated by lockdown where more people acquired pets. Then the animal breeders, breeding for their own profit, plus a large pet shop chain, adding to the problem. Hoarders. And of course people with genuine lifestyle changes meaning they can no longer care for their pets (that's heartbreaking all round).

Thank you for rescuing this boy, that's so kind of you. Can you section off a room for him, away from the dogs, or construct a large run outdoors? I know you need to rehome him, but he needs a friend as rabbits are highly social. Avoid selling sites, never give an animal away for free (they can become bait or dinner), Pets at Home I wouldn't trust to bond him or give good advice. Can you hang on for a rescue waiting list?

I'm so sad for this rabbit and the whole situation in rescue tbh, its so upsetting.

He's beautiful. Whereabouts are you? I know rabbit rescue is in a mess ATM for all the reasons @Annabelle69 mentions.

How old is he? Mine lived indoors til they were about 8 then moved outside and they've been fine. If you set him up outdoors now he's time to grow in his winter coat. Lots of good dog/cat proof housing available. Buns need a pair though.

'Thumper' as he's been named is at my daughters. Dog would kill him here. He seem happy to play with the cats. Uses a pad thing/litter for toilet. She's found an old cardboard box lined with towels . He has the run of the flat.

@goingpearshaped we are in east Cheshire.

@HangingOver he's approx 4 months old.

Daughter phoned the rspca about the other animals but they couldn't even take 1 rabbit, let alone the other 13 and cats/kittens . It's reported though. She would keep him but can't afford to long term.

You could try rabbit Facebook groups?

I know on rat ones people are sometimes looking for a single rat when they’ve had one die leaving a single one.

I’d imagine you might get similar with rabbits when something has happened to one of a bonded pair?

Steelesauce · 06/05/2022 21:30

Shame he is male as I have a lone house rabbit at the moment who needs a friend! 2 males don't usually bond well. House rabbits are a lot of work, try a house rabbit Facebook group?

Rabbit re-home? He is just beautiful. Agree re a friend. He will need neutering and vaccs.

well done @drinkingwineoutofamug poor bunny. I’ve seen a few things about bunnies being rehomed a lot at the moment. I’m not sure why it’s specifically bunnies though. Either way well done, he’s lovely.

😂

He will be living in a converted barn , lucky bunny.
He will be in isolation first as no jabs etc, but my friend will sort. Bit jealous of bunny actually
