Is age 8 unusually old for a guinea pig to live for?

Our female guinea has tuned 8 years old. She's indoors now in a large cage, a little slower than she used to be but doesn't look old. She had an op about 6 months ago to remove an absess and recovered well. Is 8 unusually old for a guinea? Can we expect her to live a lot longer?

It's quite old, so she's done well. I usually expect anything from 5-7 years. I have a 7 year old girl at the moment who is doing quite well, apart from some arthritis they have monthly injections for. My vet has known one to get too 14 but that's the only one I've ever heard of that got beyond 9 myself. 9 is pretty amazing too.

Wow! 14!! She's just turned 8, I can imagine she may well live until 9. Your poor guinea having arthritis:-(

It's a very good age. I've had guineas for nearly 30 years and my oldest was 7.5. I'll be very happy if my current girls get to that.

Slowness could be a bit of arthritis - may be worth a chat with the vet about pain relief - just watch out that she can still reach back and eat her caecotrophs if she's not quite as mobile.

Since she's slower, is she holding any of her legs straight or angles you wouldn't expect in a younger guinea pig? That could signal arthritis. It's not uncommon.

The vet said 8 years old for a guinea pig was unusual when i took mine in at that age.

I have had six guinea pigs. Only one, the last got to 8+ years. She lived indoors. Had an Oxbrow urinery tact supplement biscuit everyday for the last couple of years and I am convinced that helped her to live longer.
