My daughter has a hamster who is almost 2 years old (the hamster is almost 2) we have had her since 8 weeks old. Been a lovely friendly pet. Last night I didn’t see her running around her cage as normal. I thought maybe she had been out playing then went for a nap. This morning I went to check on her and she wasn’t in her bed. I found her under her ramp (it’s a 3 story cage) and she seamed quite unresponsive. I picked her up and she only seams to be walking in one direction but more crawling than walking. Eyes are weepy, she has peed and soiled herself and not cleaned. She’s asleep in a large tub with fresh bedding and she’s just sleeping but still breathing. Iv tried to give her a drink but she’s not interested. Unfortunately we have covid in the house hold and when I called the vet they wouldn’t see us and told us to make her comfortable. Which is what I have done. They said hamsters rarely make it to two years old so she’s had a good life. I do feel it’s the end for her but we only lost our dog a few months back who was 11 and it was unexpected and sudden so we are still very cut up about that. Could there be anyway she’s not dying? She hasn’t deteriorated any further than when I found her this morning. I tried to look about hibernation but the temp in my house would have been no less than 12 last night as we are well into spring now and she was fine all winter. She doesn’t appear in pain just very tired I did take her out of the tub and she just found somewhere to snuggle in and fall asleep on me. Should I try a different vets or are they all the same with covid ?
