Can someone give me some ideas. My hamster is wanting out of her cage all the time. So I put her in her ball and she escapes everytime! So I started to just let her wander round my living room (moved everything she could chew like wires etc). My cute little fluff ball is really testing my patience as she now is destroying my carpet my chewing in one particular corner and is obsessed really with it. I've put pillows in front of it and she just tried to burrow through that aswell. She has chew toys, ball, wheel and burrowing box. I also have made a few puzzle things using toilet rolls. Any ideas are welcome.

Hello. Hopefully I can give you some ideas.Hamsters, like all pet rodents do need daily out of cage time and it's a case of finding what works for you in your home setup. Please don't use plastic exercise balls though. They disorientate and distress rodents, plus they are trapped inside with their own urine and faeces. They don't meet welfare standards.

Is her cage big enough? Minimum size should be 80cm. I.e Hamster Heaven, Savic Sky Metro, Alaska, Ikea Detolf etc. Is the wheel big enough? They need a 28cm solid wheel, any smaller and it causes back damage. Trixie do a great wooden one.

No one wants their carpet destroyed so do you have a room that is Hamster Proof like a bathroom? You can put a "baby gate" across the door, a few feet high, solid wood, which you can easily step over to remove the hazard of opening and closing doors. My Gerbils use my bathroom or upstairs ensuite in this way. Failing that you could fill the bath tub with boxes, packging paper, a 28cm wheel, foraging treats etc.
