Guinea summer accommodation

We have acquired two adorable baby sows from a rescue. We are all smitten. Even dh, who was against ‘project guinea pig’ keeps smiling at them and has commented on how sweet their noises are. Smile

They are installed in the pantry next to the kitchen in a c&c set up (3x2 plus an extra L shape of three modules on the side).

I would like them to go outside for the summer months, so they can enjoy unfettered access to grazing on the lawn. I’m considering this ‘Arched rabbit house’ from Framebow (their Guinea pig houses are too small). What do you experts think?

My alternative option is a 7ft Chartwell hutch inside a large full height chicken run.

It does look really lovely (and would look gorgeous in your garden ) but I think I'd go with a 7' hutch inside a chicken run.

Reasons - chicken run should be pretty fox proof and you can add extra security .
You need to anchor things to the ground in case of windy weather .
You can move the hutch and run around easier for fresh grass .
Guinea[pigs will ( I 100% guarentee) hide in the furthest corner Grin so you'll be streching and cursing to catch the little swine .

A hutch in a secure run will give them the best of both worlds - secure but having acess as they see fit .

I would recommend a 'skirt' - wire mesh round the perimeter , secured well (we used heavy duty tent pegs on our runs ) so that nothing can dig in . (Pigs don't dig so you don't need to worry about them)

You can put a shade over the roof for summer .
And guinea pigs don't really like ramps , but you can customised them with higher sides and make sure they're not steep .

Is your chicken run one you can go inside yourself ?

Have you got photos of the new piggies ?

Thanks. Good points all of them. The chicken run I’ve got my eye on is this one. I like the fact it’s extendable and you can walk in and sit with the pigs. I’d probably start with a 2x3 module one.

The hutch is 6ft not 7ft - my mistake. Still a decent size though.

The piggies have no problem with the ramp in their inside cage - they are thundering up and down it all day; but one lunatic does like to leap off the side. Confused

The arched set up is SO pretty though! I’m such a sucker for aesthetics. That’s why I posted - I knew I should probably be persuaded out of it!

Think about trying to catch them again....

hedgehogger1 · 04/01/2021 19:12

Plus that's a steep ramp for Guineas. Lots don't like Ramps and need a tunnel round it

hedgehogger1 · 04/01/2021 19:13

The walk in thing is nice. Have that. I bought mine the Omlet tunnel system. They ate it. Fuckers

You’re right. Catching them would be a total arse.

Ok. Hutch and chicken run looking like the better option.

Ohh they are gorgeous Grin
I love guinea-pigs popping little shiney eyes .

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 04/01/2021 20:17

Ahh, they're lovely
We have the double 6ft chartwell for our boys, it's a good hutch.

Cute little ears , soe pigs have very standy-up ears like your pigs , some floppier like a geranium leaf .
One of ours could fold his ears back like angels' wings .

You'll have all the "getting to know them " to look forward to . What their favourite foods are and what they'll spit back at you saying
My bum will need to be in danger of slamming shut before I'd eat THIS

You have been warned Grin
