Rabbit accident - I feel awful

RabbitGuilt · 29/11/2020 07:11

I have two young mini lops, and this morning I had an accident with one that was entirely my fault. As I was leaving the room where they live, I went to shut the door and one dashed out after me and I caught one of his front paws in the door.

He’s is limping and not putting weight on his front right paw and he’s gone off to his “bedroom”. The vets open at 9.30, so I’ll see how he goes until then and call them.

I just feel so, so dreadful. I’m usually so careful with the door, but they were feeding and he dashed over so fast. I’m trying to hold it together in front on my six year old, but I’m shaking and trying not to cry.

My poor, poor bunny. Any suggestions as to what I could do until the vets open?

Thanks Sad

you might not even need the vets, he might have just stubbed his foot on the door.

RabbitGuilt · 29/11/2020 07:17

I think I definitely caught it in the door, I could feel it when the door went to shut Envy

He’s not putting any weight on the paw, so he’s definitely in pain and think the vets is going to be necessary Sad

Could you put the paw in a wee splint? Lolly stick and bandage? And make a big cuddly fuss of bunny?
It's a horrible feeling, when you hurt a small creature by accident. But he will probably be fine OP.

Skipsurvey · 29/11/2020 07:52

he is resting his paw, it will just need rest and will recover, i am sure.

Elmo311 · 29/11/2020 07:53

If he's not weight bearing on it, that means it's hurts, don't listen to others OP. It's sensible to take him in to get checked out.

Hope all is ok x

ShipshapeShore · 29/11/2020 08:06

My cats have been squashed in doors before, darting out from nowhere and dashing through! They were OK but you do feel bad, don't you? Accidents happen, I'm sure bun will be fine.

SilkieCat · 29/11/2020 08:09

If its still the same at 9.30am I would call vets and see if they can help / what they advise.

If he likes food maybe some food - ours love carrot sticks and rocket. Or just sit with him if you have time or put him in his favourite place if he has one and struggles to move. Ours has a fluffy rug which is his favourite. Hope he gets better soon.

RabbitGuilt · 29/11/2020 08:12

Well, he seems a little better already. He’s eating and drinking, done a wee and a few poos. He’s hopping around, but not quite putting weight on it. He has just jumped up (but of a jump up) into his favourite nap spot, had a good clean (using the damaged paw but tentatively) and has just settled down for a nap.

I’ll check on him again in a bit. He’s actually due to see the vet tomorrow morning at 9am, so I’ll see how he looks in a bit.

Thanks for the advice and reassurance. Flowers

that is great he has an appointment anyway

Lindy2 · 29/11/2020 08:25

It's good it's a little better. I'd see how it goes today as you already have a vet appointment for Monday morning anyway.

I did similar to my cats paw once. I was closing a window just as she decided that jumping out through it would be a good idea. I felt so awful too, but accidents do happen. It's not your fault.

I hope bunny continues to improve today.

RabbitGuilt · 29/11/2020 13:16

Spoke to the vet and they said that if he’s able to put some weight on it and is eating and drinking fine (which he is), then they are fine to wait and see him tomorrow morning.

He seems a bit subdued and sorry for himself, and hasn’t done his mega jump, but he’s using the paw more and more.

Still feel awful though.

Wolfiefan · 29/11/2020 13:21

Please don’t feel awful. Accidents do happen.

Elmo311 · 29/11/2020 14:03

@RabbitGuilt It was an accident, and it sounds like bunny is doing better now too. You sound to me like a good owner and if your rabbit was still not putting weight on that foot you would've taken him in.
He's probably just a bit bruised. It's great that he'll get checked over tomorrow and hopefully the vet can put your mind at ease.

RabbitGuilt · 30/11/2020 12:04

Just a quick update - vet said everything seems fine with the paw. Probably just a bit of bruising.

Thanks for the reassurance and understanding Flowers

Glad to hear your bunny is fine OP Flowers

SilkieCat · 30/11/2020 12:20

Glad to hear your bunny is fine and hope his paw is less sore today Flowers.

giletrouge · 30/11/2020 12:24

Fab news.

No chance of a bunny pic I suppose? (Shameless pleading...) Grin

ArcherDog · 30/11/2020 12:54

How about a photo of our new arrival. A beautiful rehome called Rosie and her and our existing boy Merlin bonded immediately. So happy he’s got a girlfriend again.

Oh he's lovely! Is his little paw better now? Smile

Howcanwehelp · 01/12/2020 10:23

This sounds like my kitten many years ago. She hurt her foot and wasn't putting weight on it. We took her to the vet who said it was fine. We went on holiday and left her with my in laws who carried her and made sure she was comfy. She was still limping when we got back and we were worried. Until I put some food down and she jumped off the fence and bounded over. The little thing was doing it for attention. She had the perfect ouchy paw pose :-)

RabbitGuilt · 01/12/2020 11:55

@Howcanwehelp Ha ha! It's amazing how clever they can be.

Yes, he seems totally fine now - running and jumping all over the place.

I'm now totally paranoid about shutting the door though Sad
