Guinea pig advice

We have 2 guineas. They have free roam of the conservatory. The 'boss' piggie is going to the vet tomorrow for a hysterectomy, and removal of a lump.
That's not really my worry (although I am a bit worried), but what's bothering me is that they (her and her sister) are just not really getting on right now. The boss is keeping away from her sister, and they are snappy with each other. Most of today she has been in the living room under the chair. She is eating and pooing normally, but she is just out of sorts. Any ideas what it could be? It's almost like the roles are reversed and the sister is now the boss.. is this possible roles have swapped? They are both 3.

I think you'll find it will settle down once she's recovered from her operation, it's not unusual for a guinea pig to behave differently towards other pigs if they are in pain. They tend not to show that they are ill in obvious ways but it can show with changed behaviour in a group.
I hope it all goes well for her, please remember the rule that a photo has to be shared though! Grin

Thank you. I'm hoping they get back to normal soon. Photo of the girls in happier times. 😊

They are gorgeous, we had a boar that was the same as the one on the left.

dustybluebell · 22/10/2020 22:17

Thank you. They are little sweeties. The one on the left is called Cooks. She's the one having the op tomorrow.. and the one on the right is Candice.

Aww lovely piggies .
Is the lump attached to the uterus ?
It is very likely pain and hormones that is causing the upset with your piggie .

Sows can be quite feisty (boars in our house were soppy articles , the females ruled ! )

Good Luck with the surgery , it is a stessful time .

dustybluebell · 23/10/2020 06:25

@70isaLimitNotaTarget thank you. The lump is in her neck just underneath in the roll of chub. The vet said its un related to the cysts on her ovaries.
Surgery today. Thanks. I'm taking her for 8 today.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Cooks.

@Acerred thank you me too. She was so scared this morning going in her box.
I'll post an update once I hear.
Thanks again for the support.

Aww. poor thing. I'll check later for news, hopefully she'll be fine and munching her favourite veggies later on.

Absolutely devastated. Had a call about an hour ago that she didn't make it. The vet said she had her preliminary check and all seemed well, but she took one breath and passed. He said they gave her CPR and anesthetic reversal, but she didn't come round.
I'm absolutely cut up. I truly thought she'd be ok.
Don't know what else to say.. just hurts.

Ah Sad Shock poor love .

It is a huge shock when your pet doesn't come through surgery .
Guinea-pigs are fragile complex little animals .

Be consoled that it would've been quick and the Vets would've done what they could but unfortunately as you know piggies don't make good patients .

Leaves a big space torn out of your heart though .

Are they giving you the piggie back so her cagemate can grieve ?

DaysLikeThis1 · 23/10/2020 14:44

So sorry OP. I know just how heartbreaking it can be.
Guinea pigs are such sweet little creatures with big personalities, it is so hard when you lose one.

dustybluebell · 23/10/2020 14:59

I have her here. Do I show her to Candice? I don't know what to do. My daughter is due home from school and she's been messaging all day asking if I've heard.
Also Cooks tummy is very swollen.. is that fluid? I'm just so sad. Can't keep it together.

Pop her in the sleeping area with Candice , let her sniff her and walk round her . They need to know they've gone and you haven't just hidden her .

Swelling is likely pooling oedeama and gas Envy

I am so sorry. Poor little pig. 70 has, as always, given great advice.

Thanks @DaysLikeThis1 and @70isaLimitNotaTarget and @Acerred
I left her in the cage with Candice who looked absolutely freaked out and she just jumped out the cage and back to a hidey. She has been wandering around as though she could be looking for her, but she is eating and sleeping and pooing, so for now she seems ok.
My daughter had cried and cried and we're just going to try and watch a happy film together.
Thanks for listening. X

You might see Candice grooming her, they do that at times. Thanks
