Rabbit died under anaesthetic

I feel so awful and guilty. My 5 month old rabbit was being spayed on Thursday. They gave her the anaesthetic and got as far as shaving her tummy a little. She died. They tried to revive her for 30 minutes.
I got her and her brother in June, he was neutered a few weeks ago, but she became very aggressive, was biting and growling often, thought spaying would calm her.
We buried her Thurs afternoon after the dc came from school. At 1030 my ds16 freaked, started insisting that she had to be dug up and placed with her brother. He had read online that the rabbit that's left could die from depression and loneliness. It took us calling an out of hours vet, for ds to calm down.
We have placed a towel with scent on it, in the hutch. He's got a small soft toy, that he's lying on. He's eating and drinking. He's running around the house and binkying. I'm hoping that he's going to be ok.

Sorry to hear this :( they can be fragile under anaesthetic

Kanaloa · 30/09/2020 12:53

Sorry to hear this, your son must be upset. I agree rabbits can get lonely alone and really want to be with others. I believe some rescue places will sort of match you up with another rabbit and let them meet to ensure they get along okay. Maybe this would be a possibility for you.

I had my rabbit spayed a few weeks back and she’s become incontinent and has severe hind leg weakness. Feel your pain x

I'm sorry about your rabbit. It happened to our puppy when I was a child and the shock of no pet coming home took a long time to fade. Hope other rabbit is doing well.

So sorry to hear about your bunny. We had two bunnies who lived together and one died. I felt so sad for the one left behind. I thought she must really miss her lifelong friend. But I was told by the vet that rabbits dont miss a specific rabbit, they just miss company. So her brother will probably be happy with a new friend and wont think about his sister. Still very sad for you though 😭

RedRosie · 30/09/2020 17:57

I'm sorry. That's very sad. I'd agree that getting a compatible companion would be a good idea, if you are in a position to do so. Preferably a rescue.

I’m really sorry! 😞

Was the vet and exotic pet specialist? I find they’re the best of the best for small animals.

Thank you. I can't believe a week has gone by. Her brother is doing really well, he's eating and drinking loads, we've decided that he's going to be a house rabbit. We had the hutch, but was waiting until they were both neutered until going outside. He has our dog, he loves climbing over him and sleeping near him. He's getting lots of attention and cuddles. The photo is Beau who's left. And Bonnie who died is lying down with the dog.

So sorry to hear about Bonnie. Thanks What beautiful rabbits. I hope Beau continues to thrive. I'm sure he'll love being with you all in the house and be a very happy bunny! Smile
