Black Dwarf Hamster?

Our 2nd hamster passed away a few weeks ago. Initially I said we wouldn’t get another one, however after having them in the house for the last 4 years or so, there’s just an empty space now & we feel like we would like to have another one!

We’ve had a Russian dwarf and a Roborovski. I’ve seen some pictures of black dwarf hamsters & they’re so cute! But proving to be quite rare? Has anyone got one? How likely is it that we’ll be able to get one?

I've seen quite a few black Russian dwarfs in pet shops and online forums. I don't think they're rare. Pet shops usually get one or two litters in at a time so the hamsters are likely to all be similar colours, so you can't really be too picky.

A breeder might be able to give you more choice over colour. Russian dwarf isn't a species as such, it's a term for a hybrid between a Campbell's dwarf and Winter White dwarf. Breeder hamsters will be purebreds, one species or the other. As far as I know, Campbell's come in black, Winter Whites do not. The National Hamster Council website has lists of breeders.
