Poorly guinea pig

One of our piggies doesn't seem right today. He's a bit listless and not eating much. When I checked just now he's sort of shaking, not continuously but every few seconds or so.

I haven't phoned vet yet but I imagine they will say monitor him overnight. But I'm worried.

Any advice please? He's 3.

He needs to see a vet, and if it was my piggie I'd want them seen tonight. Guinea pigs, as prey animals, usually mask illness (as it would make them a target to predators), so if they are showing symptoms then they are usually quite unwell.
Do you have a piggie-friendly vet?

MrsEricBana · 11/06/2020 19:36

It's true that piggies hide their illness well so if he looks ill he might be really poorly. Hooe he's ok.

Ring the emergency vet and get him seen asap. I wouldn't wait if it were my piggy. Is he eating, drinking (urinating) and pooing?

Mine always seem to get sick on the evenings or weekends.

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/06/2020 19:49

Spoken to vet, I can take him in this evening. At a cost of £170 for out of hours. I have insurance but not sure if it will be covered, need to check.

Hope he's ok. We lost his brother not that long ago. Could he have the same thing? Sad

What did the vet say?

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/06/2020 21:04

I’m at vets now. I’ve got to wait in car and wait for a call.

I had to do the same a couple of weeks ago, it's awful waiting, especially when you can't be in the room with them.

twointhemorning · 11/06/2020 22:09

Hope you get good news and are given some medicine. Sorry I've got to go to bed now. Make sure he keeps eating so his guts don't go into stasis. Hopefully some other posters on this board will be along soon. The Guinea Pig Forum is useful too for advice

AwkwardPaws27 · 11/06/2020 22:27

Thinking of your little piggie OP, I hope all goes well. They may be small, but they can take up a big piece of your heart.

Windyatthebeach · 11/06/2020 22:29

How is dpiggy op?

MrsEricBana · 12/06/2020 10:14

How is he today?

bendmeoverbackwards · 12/06/2020 13:10

He has a respiratory infection. Vet called me last night, he's been given treatment including oxygen. They wanted to keep him in ideally but it would have been £550! And £800 if we wanted an x-ray.

So I took him home and kept an eye on him overnight. He seems to have perked up a bit but his breathing is still a bit jerky.

Oh and he ate a bit of parsley and a few nuggets last night.

Update - very sad news Sad

He still wasn't right today so I spoke to my regular vet who said to bring him in this afternoon.

Vet said he was in a bad way, his breathing was very laboured. We discussed what to do, vet said he could keep him in and try various things, give him oxygen etc but he didn't sound very hopeful at all. Thought the kindest thing to do was to let him go so I signed the form Sad

Oh and apparently you can't get insurance for a guinea pig.

AwkwardPaws27 · 12/06/2020 17:54

Oh OP I'm so sorry

MrsEricBana · 12/06/2020 19:08

Oh I'm so sorry OP. You gave him great care and made sure he didn't suffer too long Flowers

twointhemorning · 12/06/2020 19:08

Oh no, that's such sad news :( So sorry.

If it was a respiratory infection it's likely he could have caught it from the other piggy.
