Hi I'm looking to getting a hamster very shortly, a syrian. I would like to know is a female or male best to get? The lady in shop says males make better pets and on the whole àlot more tamer than females. Is this correct?

I was told that males are less nippy than females- pet shop staff told me the one I bought was male, brought 'him' home, tamed and bonded; definitely not a nippy hamster- but but she is a female;

unless I have a trans-ham ,pet shop just took a guess, (or sold me a girl who needed a home regardless of asking for a male)

Males are more trouble, most of my males were always escaping, never had a female escape.

We were advised male too (and have had 2 lovely cuddly un-bitey male hamsters), but I worry for all those unwanted female hamsters out there!

I am no expert but we have a male syrian and he is LOVELY. Very friendly and huge and fluffy.

But, as with all animals, you get back what you put in. We handled him an awful lot from an early age. And he has never tried to escape Grin
